TK70 Fenix Modification


Hello, I’m John, first time poster here at BLF. I have a TK70 and wish to mod it. I have read through some of the other forum discussions on modding the TK70 but would like some clarity and, if possible a laymans guide on what to do step by step. I am an old electrician by trade but have no experience in such modifications. What I would like to know is:

  1. 2x 26650 vs 2x 32650 batterys - which is better (are there any other options - not concerned with size or weight)
  2. I read about someone changing the emitters for XLM2 - What would this do for me in reality and would it be worth pursuing?
  3. Are there any other mods I can do to the light that I’m missing?

Welcome to BLF! That is a nice Fenix, quite vintage by today’s standards but I’d still use it as is in a power outage or similar!

Now, for modifications… Unless you’re looking for a moderately difficult project, and have a reasonable budget to throw at it, then I’d reccomend selling it and just buying a Convoy or similar.

Swapping LEDs is moderately easy if you can open the light head (probably has threadlocker), but you will not gain substantial increase in output without modifying the driver. The XML LEDs are 3V, standard 5050 footprint.

If you wanted nicer light quality and were happy to keep the rest of the light stock, I’d swap the LEDs and just use NiMh cells.

For more involved work:

The original driver is expecting a voltage of 4V(ish) to 6V (4x 1.5V alkaline D cells).

A regular D cell is c. 34mm diameter x 62mm long.

The lithium cells you are describing are nominal 3.7V, 3V when empty and 4.2V when full. The naming convention for cylindrical cells is DDLL0 where DD are diameter in mm, and LL is length in mm, then there’s an 0 on the end to indicate it’s cylindrical e.g 32mm dia x 65mm long.

32650 cells might just about fit if there is enough compression in the spring, but with 4 in series you’ll have up to 16.8V which will dry the stock driver.

With the stock driver, you have a mis-match between “normal” lithium ion voltage (NMC etc) and what the driver “needs”.

You might get lucky and be able to source a replacement driver of the correct dimensions and voltage(s) input but I know of no driver which would retain the dual side switch functionality.

Lastly, be aware that mis-matched (voltage/age/capacity/impedance) cells in series can pose a danger of reverse charge and explosion.

Thats a top vintage flashlight. Would not modify it. Its worth a lot more in original form than modified.

If you want to experiment, get a $20 Convoy.

Oh man that is wayyy to nice to hack up. Here’s what I’d do: Swap the leds, but that might not be so easy as Fenix are known liberal appliers of threadlock and goop so you might fight that. Heat and strap wrenches are your friend.

For leds to swap, you need 3 volt leds in the 5050 format. Here’s some good candidates:
Cree XHP50.3 HD or HI if you can find them. Look on Convoy.com or Kaidomain.
LMP LHP351 (from Convoy) in 5000K
Luminus SFT-42R or SFT-40.
Any one of those LEDs will totally blow away the old, wheezing Cree XM-L units and give you a probably 800-1000 lumen output increase juat by swapping the leds.
keep the 4D format and just run NiMH batteries in it.

If you wanted to do different batteries, the driver is reportedly good for up to 2S (8.4 volts), so you can do two li-ions in there. 32650 size would be closest fitting, but you’d need some creative spacers to make the electrical connection to the tail, but I’d still swap the leds.
