TN31 Tailcap

Some of you will remember that I got a TN31 for Christmas and it had an intermittent problem with it not coming on. If I touched the battery carrier to the spring on the head and grounded it against the side of the head it worked. This lead me to believe that my problem was with my switch so I contacted Calvin at Illumination Supply. He was very helpful and sent me a good switch. Thank You Calvin! Now getting the tail cap off was an experience in itself. My brother and I are both pretty good sized boys and both of us together couldn’t budge it. Finally we wrapped a red shop towel around it several times and got a large pair of channel locks and wrapped heavy gauge rubber coated wire through the holes in the tail cap and used a large screw driver for leverage. After what seemed like about 30 seconds of hard straining it finally started to give. It turned really hard for a couple of full turns and came off. It had a lot of blue crap on it that I am assuming is Loctite. Why they would cement the tail cap I have no clue. This picture is after a lot of the loctite had fallen off.

Wish someone did that to their car/home locks, see how that feels :stuck_out_tongue:

It just doesn’t make any sense to me. A tail cap is something you need access to. Especially like in my case where the switch could be bad. Crazy!

I have an early run TN31, and there is no loctite on the tail threads. I’ve noticed that the tailcap on mine can loosen itself over time on mine, so maybe the loctite was added to prevent this from happening and causing water ingress. Sounds like a bit of a far-fetched theory to me though :~
