Unfortunately many American lives were affected by yesterdays’ tragedy. I used to live near Redlands a long time ago and I am shocked that it happened.
Regardless of location - any event like this is terrible.
Traffic accidents kill well over a million people a year, more than war and murder combined. People want to feel safe yet they drive like maniacs. Mass killings are always tragic and grab the headlines but it’s the daily commute that’s the real killer.
RBD, I don’t disagree with what you said, but for me, I feel the main difference is that death in a car accident, is just that, an accident. Death by being gunned down I guess feels more ‘evil’? Can’t quite put it into words.

That’s why we can’t have nice things. Nice “serious” threads. We have to keep any politics out of the thread if we want to keep a serious thread. Politics causes arguments and sb like to keep BLF light, free of arguments over politics.
You actually bring up a major problem with car “accidents”! Just calling them car “accidents” instead of a more neutral term like car “crash” causes people to view them as unavoidable. The word accident implies without any fault but many car cashes are due to careless drivers. Great example, a crash from someone texting while driving is still called a car “accident” by the media and most other people. It’s not an accident, it’s due to sheer disregard of life on the part of the texter.
And the subconscious effect of calling them car “accidents” is more of a problem that it might seem. It’s believed that there would be greater effort to reduce the causes of car crashes if we worked to call them crashes. How much money and effort does the public want to spend on something that subconsciously feels unavoidable and faultless? And it reduces the urge to prosecute drivers who killed someone due to their disregard of life.
By the way, I have never had anyone close to me killed or even seriously inured in a car crash. So there is nothing like that driving my views.
