Oral surgery sucks!

Oral sucks in general lol pun intended

I had my 2nd last tooth out when i was younger it cracked in half and i had to wait days to get surgery that pain was worse then the procedure i think. Plus being young and dumb i downed a whole pack of painkillers in a few hours the ones with codeine almost like OD lol.

I had a bad experience when I was 16 years old.
I had an absces on a tooth and spent a sleepless night in agony. Went to the dentist first thing in the morning, and in those days they just yanked the tooth out. He gave me an anesthetic injection but it didn’t work because of the infection. So he gave me some antibiotics and told me to come back late afternoon after school to have the tooth pulled.
When I went back, the anesthetic still didn’t work, so he said “doesn’t matter - I’ll pull the tooth out anyway”
(I think he had a night time job at the abbatoir…)
I could feel everything he did and as he tried to pull the tooth, it broke off at the gum.
He started poking into the root with steel spikes and long nosed pliers. I was screaming and covered in sweat and blood at that stage.
He threatened me and said if I didn’t cooperate he would have to put me into hospital. I had never been in hospital and was a bit scared what might happen. Anyway after a long ordeal, breaking up the root with spikes and pliers he got the last chips of tooth out.
I didn’t go to a dentist for 10 years after that.

I have only had Two wisdom teeth extracted. They were not infected so it went smoothly,just needed to be removed because they were affecting my other teeth.

I have also had a few root canals…some were a bit painful…….not the procedure but having my mouth open[sore jaw muscles] for several hours. Had Two done in one shot!

LESSON:

PEOPLE ARE LIKE YOUR TEETH. IF YOU IGNORE THEM THEY WILL GO AWAY!

My dentist wanted all 4 of my wisdom tooth out about 30 years ago. They were all lying sideways beneath the gum line. He took X-rays, and said he was fine taking out the lower ones, but he didn’t want to touch the pair on top. He was convinced that he would break into the sinuses, and he felt there was a high probability of damaging the facial nerve as a ‘bonus’. Breaking into the sinuses apparently one of the things oral surgeons really don’t want to have happen, it is apparently nothing but trouble if it happens. As he put it, the teeth aren’t causing any problems today, and as long as they don’t cause any problems my advice is not to touch them. 30 years later I still have them, and they have never been a problem. As for the lowers, he cut them up to get them out, but one was especially difficult. He ended up having to pack it to stop the bleeding, and frankly that one hurt for some time. In any case anytime someone you are paying to do something, tells you not to do it, it is probably good advice. If they stand to make money from doing, and don’t want too, there must be a reason.

I had 2x2 wisdom teeth removed when I was 16 and my face looked busted for a days both times. So hang in there, it sucks, but there’s definitely worse stuff.
BTW two of them didn’t even show yet, but the roots were already fully developed. So they cut the gums(?) open, used a saw to cut them in half, and pliers and hammer to get them out.

Feel better soon! That said, both my parents had their teeth replaced with either implants or dentures before they were 60. That scared the heck out me. Luckily I took care of my teeth since my 20’s. I’m 66 years old and have zero problems wit my teeth because #1, I brush and floss my teeth 3 times a day. #2, I go to the dentist twice a year for a cleaning and X-Rays to make sure there are no hidden problems.

I’m not sure the average person is supposed to be able to buy one, but I bought a dental pick on ebay years ago. Whenever I feel or see a spot that isn’t getting cleaned with brushing I clean it with that. I have only had one cavity in my life.
My only dental routine has been brushing once a day and inspecting them in the mirror. The rest… flossing, the pick, mouthwash, whatever, is as-needed. My best advice is to just pay attention to your teeth. I think that’s more important than blindly doing a routine that could be missing a spot. It works for me, I was just at a new dentist last week, and like my old dentists they commented on how good my teeth looked.

Ugggghhh that sounds traumatic. Rest up and behave yourself so you don’t have any complications. Hope you feel better soon. Also make a list of all the spicy stuff you’ll eat as soon as you get better. :+1:

I think most people have a dental horror story.I seem to be very difficult to numb, had my first painless dentistry when I was about 35, and that was a root canal!

One dentist injected my gums from different angles about 20 times when they couldn’t get it right, and a couple of days later I got dead spots around my left side and back, where I couldn’t feel anything, you could literally have stabbed me and I would not have known. When I saw that dentist again I told her about it and she tapped my head and said “I think you’ve had a little bleed dearie”. It was obvious that even her own assistant was shocked at what she was saying.Never went back to her again!

I had the two upper wisdom teeth extracted about a month ago. Overall, it went better than I expected. The administering of local anesthetic (via needle into gums and palate) was the only painful part. Once anesthetic set in, the actual extraction of both teeth only took about 10 minutes. It took a few hours for the bleeding to stop. I didn’t really experience much pain afterwards either - just some general headache, probably due to the anesthetic itself. I didn’t need to take any of the prescription-strength pain killers that the doctor prescribed.

Hammer to the teeth?? Ouch!
