TrustFire TR-801 Spontaneous Mode Changes

I have a TrustFire TR-801 (compact Q5 3-mode 18650 light) that changes modes spontaneously (without pressing the switch). I've tested shaking the light, and that doesn't cause the mode change on-demand, I've cleaned the threads and contacts with alcohol swabs, tightened the screwed in switch base, both end "springs" seem to be springy enough, etc. But if I set it either tail standing or head standing and leave it alone, it cycles between the 3 modes every 30-200 seconds on its own. Before I scrap the light for parts, can anyone suggest anything else simple I can check on to fix it?

Example image, from dhgate.com:

Maybe it is a switch problem. Most often is the tail silicone boot. It presses hard on the switch button and need just a bit of "wind" to make it trigger. Try disassembling the tailcap and inspect the boot internally if some material (where it touches the switch cap) can be clipped away. That is the usual fix. Or try to change the boot from another flashlight.

I think it is a switch problem as well

Take the switch out of the equation .. if it still does it without the switch ...it's not the switch :P

Replace the switch with a paper clip and if it still does it than it's not the switch. The reflector could be shorting on the emitter connections also so make sure there is an isolation disc between the emitter and the reflector before you give up. Another thing is the pill may be loose so take it out and check for an isolation disc on the reflector while it's out. If the pill is tight and the threads are clean and the reflector isn't shorting out than the driver is the problem.

I think you guys are right and the switch was the problem, since I was able to tap the switch slightly in certain ways to get it to switch modes. In trying to unscrew the switch mechanism from the tailcap to inspect it, it got stuck in the body (I think the threads were bad). So instead of trying to fix this, it has joined the junk/parts bin and I've ordered a ShiningBeam S-Mini instead. :)

So do you want to sell the Trustfire now? Laughing

If anyone wants the half-broken Trustfire for parts (for free) send me a PM and prepare to send me a (pre-stamped) SASE.

[USA only, since I'm too lazy to deal with customs and post office lines.]

I’ll take it. PM me your info and I’ll send out an envelope.

A 10 pack of spare switches is only a couple of bucks and should be a staple in every flashie's parts bin. Even the best lights can have a bum switch and nearly all manufacturers use the same switches. ;)

PM sent.
