I’ve been testing a low-cost LED light strip I picked up recently, and thought I’d share some impressions here in case anyone else is considering something similar for workspace / backlighting / general utility use.
Basic Specs
Type:5050 RGB LED strip (5m)
Voltage: 12V
Power draw:~14.4W per meter (measured 13.8–14.1W on my bench PSU)
CRI:Not officially rated, but visually I’d estimate around 75–80 for the white channel
Controller: IR remote (basic), supports PWM dimming
Price paid: ~$9 (AliExpress)
Build Quality
Copper traces look decent for a budget strip; not the thinnest I’ve seen.
Adhesive backing is average — sticks fine to clean metal/plastic but not drywall.
Solder joints at the factory segments are actually cleaner than I expected.
Brightness & Tint
On max white mode, output is pretty respectable. It’s obviously not high-CRI, but for ambient use it’s perfectly acceptable.
RGB modes have smooth transitions and no visible flicker on video (tested at 240fps).
PWM frequency measured around 1.2 kHz— not incredible, but higher than many cheap strips.
Thermals
The strip does warm up during extended max-brightness use, especially if mounted on an insulating surface.
On an aluminum channel, temps drop significantly; definitely recommended for longevity.
Mods / Improvements
A few things I tried that made noticeable differences:
Added an aluminum extrusion → better thermal performance + more even diffusion
Replaced the cheap IR controller with a MOSFET-based PWM controller → smoother dimming and less noise
Used an external 12V 5A PSU instead of the included adapter (voltage sag was obvious on full white)
Conclusion
For a sub-$10 strip, performance is surprisingly solid. If you’re looking for:
cheap ambient lighting,
something to mod / integrate into a project, or
a strip to experiment with without worrying about breaking it,
…it’s actually a pretty good value. Definitely not a high-end high-CRI solution, but it exceeds expectations for the category.
