Hi, I’m thinking about modding my SC21 Pro into a 3xLED light. I’d want to put 3500k 519a emitters. Do I just need to find an MCPCB/lens or would I also need to somehow find a new driver? Do you have any tips for me?
Thank you!
I dont know the answer to those questions.
When I want an SC21 Pro with a diffused beam with no hotspot, I like to use a Pebbled Tir.
here is an album with more details
Three LEDs in parallel should be fine for the driver.
Have you taken the bezel off yet to investigate? I don’t have the light so I can’t help with measurements (quick search didn’t find any). You’ll want to know the stock TIR diameter and height.
I suspect due to the small diameter you’ll need to acquire a custom 3535 triple MCPCB/optic made for the TS10. I’m not sure who, if anyone, has those available right now. You could also try finding the Lumintop fwaa setup.
One you have the parts, you’d pop out the driver, drill a hole in the center of the shelf, and reassemble. A spacer may or may not be needed depending on the measurements.
Back when Fasttech was alive, they had PCBs and TIRs for 3-ups, but they weren’t as tall as the usual single reflectors/TIRs, so you might need a slug to raise up both a bit.
Thanks all for the insight. I think I’ll simply give a pebbled TIR lens a try!
I’ve had a look at your gallery. Sadly the AE item isn’t listed anymore. Do you have the item name or current AE item number/link for something suitable? Thank you!
thanks for letting me know, I will update my album with the new part number…
Convoy Store sells the 20mm pebbled Tir for XP LED (3535 footprint that matches the stock SC21 Pro solder pads), here is the link
fwiw, Ive tried 25°, 30°, and 45°, I like the 30° best, followed by 45°… suggest you buy a couple different angles to see which one suits your preferences ![]()
some details to be aware of when using the Tir. The bottom opening of the lens barely clears the corners of a 3535 LED (since I dont use the centering ring) and if the bezel is reopened and reclosed repeatedly, a small amount of the plastic lens will get shaved off by the corners of the LED. You can avoid this issue by using a Tir for XM footprint (5050). I have not done any detailed beam comparisons to determine whether there is any advantage to the 3535 over the 5050 Tir…
I sometimes need to clean out a few scraps of plastic from the base of the Tir. The reason this happens, is because I do not use the centering ring (nor the glass lens), when I replace the reflector. This is because the Tir is slightly taller than the reflector, so removing those parts allows the bezel to close without excess gap to the head.
Another factor to be aware of, is that the bezel will close slightly further than with the stock reflector. The result is the Hot symbol on the bezel wont line up directly over the switch button, the way it does in stock configuration. This is purely cosmetic, no effect on function.
Also note, I do reuse the rubber O ring that sits against the glass that I remove. This gives the Tir a watertight seal to the bezel.
Good luck w your mod! lmk if I can help answer any questions.
For a triple the TS10 TIR lens should fit the SC21 Pro. I don’t know if they sell the MCPCB, too. You would also need a spacer because a triple optic is shorter than the reflector.
