Twisty head to change mode - how does that work?

I am thinking of getting a light that uses a twisty head to change modes…but have never handled a light like this before :nerd_face: . The specific light in question is the L3 L10 (1AA, Nichia 219, 4 modes with firefly) and it lists this:

Mode switch: Tighten and loosen the head to switch between modes.

How precise is this? Are you simply making/breaking electrical contact by unscrewing the head or is there some kind of electro-mechanical switch with as precise amount of turning?

*oh fudge :cry: , I should have bought last night as I now see it is out of stock/backorderable with unknown restocking potential. Regardless, I am still interested in learning how this and similar lights work.

Yep, just loosen it to break contact and retighten it. In some lights this can be very finicky, but my L10 is great. Easily the best twisty I have bought yet.

is there any kind of tactile response, such as a ball detent, so you feel when you have rotated it correctly?

No it just goes off, so then you turn it back on. It sounds complicated but it is well worth the space it saves.

Lights that have this function should have the battery board contacts reenforced to hold up under the additional wear. Additional solder or springs, etc.

That's for colors other than black.
