UF-T20 Red mod questions

Howdy Folks - first post here, but I’ve been reading up for the past few weeks. Lots of good info on this forum!

I started down the rabbit trail of flashlights while looking for a good red flashlight to use for coyote hunting. I wanted something with good through and little or no spill. Budget was <$50, and nothing huge (read: weapon mountable, not a huge spotlight).

After reading here and other places I decided an aspheric style would fit the bill well, and I liked the UF-T20 for its glass lens, brass pill, and that it uses 18650 batteries. I ordered one and tore apart an old laptop battery to salvage battery cells (first one yielded 6 good cells, yay!).

Now that i have it and have played around a little I’d like a little more performance than I’m getting. I would say I have shootable light out to 100yards, on a fresh battery. Useable but not great. From what I’ve read it seems the stock red LED is an XP-E I read that the XP-E2 has more output, it seems like it’s 3W instead of the XP-E’s 2.5W. ( Cree XLamp XP-E2 Color LED )

There seem to be other options too, and then more options for picking a driver etc. I’d be fine with just two modes (Hi/Lo) and even just high would be OK.

So, if some of you more experienced modders were to mod a red T20, what would you recommend? Is the XP-E2 a good choice? Is there a better driver? I’m not afraid of soldering, machining the pill, or programing a driver if necessary.

Thanks!

Nate
