First of all I want to announce my skepticism about the specs of this thing(d’ohh). I wouldn’t give it more than 5000 real lumens, especially considering that the current draw is 8.5A for all those LED’s. Also, the thermal output of 12 XML-T6s to give 13800 lumens (1150 lumens each) would be too much for that heatsink to dissipate.
I wonder if you can modify the driver to draw more power from the batteries, like I did on my TR-J12.
thats only about 700 ma to each t6 or about 280 led lumen… 280 x 12 =3360 led lumen… or about 2500 OTF guessing 75% of the light makes it out the front.
KDs site is unresponsive right now… i dont know if they make a 12 series boost driver… i know they make 5,7, &9
There are some threads about this light and a nice review of the 9xt6 which seems to be identical just with 3 LEDs less.
No one knows what current they mean, if it would be tailcap current it should be nice and bright. Even if it is output to LEDs it would be nice and bright.
But we all know manufacturer ratings are crap.
Look on my quick and dirty current measurements in the 9xt6 review. 6.5A with fully charged battery’s and than rapid downwards. Runtime is short and if you use only mid you have to carry a large and heavy light for nothing.
Also there are some posts regarding the kd driver upgrade which no one has get working until now.
I have the Skyray 9x T6. Originally I got 4a at the tail cap with 3 x 26650’s. I don’t seem to have the higher current on mine as others have posted about. But I upgraded the wires from the driver up to the LED’s, but not the wiring connected to each LED, and my tail cap reading jumped slightly to 4.20a. But even as it was when I got it, the 9x T6 totally stomped my Trustfire TR-J12, no comparison. So if this 12x T6 is driven similar, it’ll be more light than you’ll know what to do with.
I’m sure it kicked the TR-J12’s ass, it’s normal. But this larger one, giving only 8.5A to 12LED’s means they’s really underdriven. Even if they made a boost driver for that it would still not be able to handle the heat output.
Stock, the TR-J12 is ~the same with the SkyRay King. Same cd/sqm but a bit larger output. 2350lm vs 2200lm.
And after the driver swap on the TR-J12, it’s clear that 4000lumens will beat 2200lm.
!
It just seems that 12 LED’s are overkill for that driver and that heatsink, and I wouldn’t pay 89 bucks for it.
Boggy, those are really great beam shots, thanks. I have the upgrade driver for the J12, just hadn’t installed it yet. I assume in your photo with the KD 60watt driver, that’s on 3 cells correct?
