I recently purchased several UML1000 lights from here
I do a lot of diving and wanted a small light with a push-button switch and better output than the UK sl4 eLED I was using. I also wanted to keep the cost <$100.
I was originally looking at the Tovatec but they didn’t have the output I was looking for. At this point I realized rechargeable would also be a pretty nice feature.
I was looking into the Brinyte DIV08, until I realized how big it actually is.
Someone turned me on to the Edge HOG Morph 1000 Backup. Perfect size, variable output, and rechargeable battery. Price was a little higher than I was looking to spend though. (Edited to add: Also looks very similar to the Princeton Tec Genesis)
Someone else turned me on to the UML1000. Essentially the same light with some minor difference in the beam angle/widths. Price was definitely more reasonable than the “name brand” ones.
I got both the narrow and wide beams. Both have their uses. The wide is definitely a clean, even throw. Great for video/photo from what I’ve seen so far. One of my dive buddies was using it the other day and it was great.
The variable output and strobe options are both great for the diving I do. Variable output for checking things out and getting inside areas. The strobe is great for scooter (DPV) diving. Don’t need the light on the whole time, draining down the battery, but great for seeing the guy leading the group in lower visibility conditions.
My wife did a night dive with them and used it as her primary and said it was perfect.
The battery life indicator on the switch is also great. I did 3-4 dives with it before it even went into the blue.
Because the light is small enough, a couple of my dive buddies strap the light to their mask for hands free use.
So far, I can’t find anything wrong with these lights. The only downside is the batteries aren’t common and most places won’t ship them to where I live. Hopefully they will last a while before needing to be replaced.
