Well, the difference is not that much, IMO :~ I’m quite sure if you reinstall your Windows after 5 years of using it, you will see some improvements too (unless you already made it).
Both processors you’ve mentioned have already an integrated graphic chip and I don’t know if your ATI X100 is AGP or PCIe. Anyway, don’t know if integrated Intel HD graphics will be faster that your old ATI card. That G2020 is newer and have higher clocks (100 Mhz) and it’s 22nm (vs. 32 nm G645). Quite sure it will be a tad faster
On the other hand, and if I remember well, your actual E5200 has quite good OC possibilities.
I personally prefer hi-end Intel processors, but maybe low-end AMD would give you more bang for the buck
EDIT: for those who suggested SSD - agreed, SSD can boost system a lot. But that guy is on very low budget. 250 bucks for SSD? Too much for him I’d say 64 GB max, Crucial M4 or Samsung 830. And don’t forget, you’ll need a mobo with SATA3 ports!!!

Seriously though, unless you open and close a lot of programs regularly … then i dont see the point in you adding an SSD … all it will do is make windows boot up a little faster (how often do you load up windows?), and every time you open a program it will OPEN a little faster, that is all. Once the prgrams are open you will be stuck with the same speeds you have now!
You’ve never worked on a machine with a quality SSD, have you? The difference in everything you do is astounding. Even with tons of RAM, windows swaps to virtual memory a LOT (which uses your hard-drive). Once you’ve worked on a machine with a good SSD, you’ll hate working on one that doesn’t have one…
Not recently … I trialled one a couple of years ago and didnt notice much difference apart from boot/load times so gave it back to my mate … but i must also note … i dont “work” on computers (unless you count word & excel) … i predominantly play games.
Should i try out a newer one? im running a core 2 duo e6750, with 16gb RAM and a radeon 4970?
BTW … I do plan to build a new pc this year and it will definately have an SSD
Yeah, I’d rather go for i3 too, but hey, you can get AMD Athlon II X4 640 for ~70 bucks at Amazon. It doesn’t have integrated graphics but maybe he can use his old ATI.
taking your location into consideration, my recommendation :
Intel G1610 ( I don’t think you will notice any difference with G2020 )
Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H ( has USB 3.0 & 1 SATA 6Gb port ) VFM mobo
4GB Corsair DDR3 ( 2x4GB only if you are using a 64 bit OS )
get a decent PSU too ( eg Corsair CX v2 430W, CoolerMaster 350W ), not a generic one.
and maybe :
1TB WD Blue HDD ( costs only a bit more than the 500GB model )
Getting a SSD with your current setup is not a good idea since your mobo does not have SATA 6Gb.
Actually, unless you are a gamer/developer your existing system is quite OK, imo. If it feels sluggish try reinstalling (fresh) the OS.
Sata2 or sata3 does not matter so much,except if you move or copy big files form ssd to an other ssd.
4k and 4k qd32 performance and access time are much more important. And these values are almost the same on sata2 and sata3 mobos.
At a relatively low price, the most visible performance boost would be an ssd + 2GB ram. That’s all.
^ Would it really be worth it ? My cousin has the same config as the OP. It never seems slow, most people who use it find it pretty good. With a mkv movie, mp3 track, browsing, chatting going on simultaneously the CPU usage never exceeds 16%. My advice would be : reinstall your OS, if you still think it is not good enough do what the others suggest. Are you using WinXP btw ? Hope you use CCleaner + Defraggler or similar.
I don´t get the SSD thing. I know it is supposed to be fast as hell, but when do you actually profit from it?
Let´s say Windows is on it and some programs. So the progs open faster. And then?
I´m working in the CG industry with big programs and huge data amounts, but to work fast, I need processor speed for calculating stuff and RAM for storing data that is needed for the progs.
So, when would I profit from an SSD? I´ve talked to my brother who uses an SSD and all he can say is “it´s fast…” but he can´t really name a special case you could “feel” its speed.
Don´t get me wrong, but that sounds like what my brother said. I know SSDs are fast, but what more can they do than opening and saving files fast?
And opening/saving is NOT what slows down my workflows.
Another thing the OP may be able do for very low cost is use a designated SD card or otherwise as a buffer using Windows ReadyBoost. In a system with only 2GB of Ram there is a good chance of seeing improvement using as little as 2 or 4GB of flash memory.
Yeah, as your brother and I have said, it makes the computer more responsive.
For CG purposes, there has been a debate whether SSD’s are worth the money, and I do agree it’s better to invest in CPU/RAM/GPU.
If you do have some money to splash, using SSD’s as a scratch disk will be nice. ie) SSD caching for H77/Z77 motherboards
I must admit I’m not too familiar with CG editing though.
Thanks ryansoh, that´s what I thought. I may be buying a new PC these days and I´m thinking about SSDs. I may get a smaller one with 128 just to see if I can benefit from it.
