The old original silver 26650 L6 I gave him years ago I believe is 3800lm. If I send him this triple LED SST40 in like 6500K with batteries it will be an upgrade right?
He’s not a flashlight snob, but he’s my brother. Seriously, he still thinks the L6 is like super awesome, but it will be fun to upgrade him. He lets me hunt deer on his land, and gives me a lot of free venison if I fail, so got to keep my little brother happy. I figure this will have at least the same spill as the old L6, and a lot more throw.
Lumen output from 3X21A SST40 will be approximately double L6. But, my guess is L6 will still probably throw further thanks to the giant reflector.
Consider getting him the version of 3X21A that uses a single SBT90.2 LED. It will significantly out-throw his L6 with similar spill brightness. Convoy L7 is great too and is the same size and shape as L6, but with the improved performance provided by the SBT90.2 LED.
@Let-There-Be-Light, it will be a considerably upgradade in terms of brightness, but it probably won’t be an upgrade in terms of throw/lumen of output.
Also, I would actually recommend getting the 5000k version. Cuts through atmosphere better
The L6 is still a very nice light, there aren’t many light that compete with it, most will have less throw, but more Lumens.
That means, you will throw a wall off light and still won’t see a thing. Better buy him a L7.
A GT-FC40 drop in would not be a bad idea either for slightly less output but higher CRI at lower color temperature so that there would be less atmospheric refraction and reflection. (3000k R9080 or 1800k-2000k R9050)
If you want more throw (ie, more concentrated hotspot), an L2 gets you that over an L6. The L6 brute-forces its throw.
The SF47 is similar to the L6, it’s got a wider hotspot, and 9000 lemons gives you lots of range but over a wider area.
Now, you want pure throw at long range, a smaller more concentrated hotspot is what you want. A wider hotspot is (to me, at least) more of a general-purpose and more useful beam.
I got some nice throwers (Catapult Mini, IF22A, P30, L2, etc.) with pencil-beams, and they’re great at long distance, but nigh useless close-in. Like looking in a dark closet with a laser-pointer.
Actually, those might be good options, too, the CatMini and IF22A.
Forgot to put a letter in the mailbox earlier, so trotted out at like 0100 to make sure it’d be in tomorrow’s mail, and brought my ’47 with me.
Passed a long alley with garages on my way back, and just out of curiosity, 2clicked to see how the light would do. Kee-rist, it lit up the whole alley like daylight.
Yeah, an L6 or Q8 could throw some lemons that way, but a (relatively) slim 21700 light that just slipped into my hoodie-pouch felt so lightweight in comparison.
I’m realizing this. After browsing Simon’s AE site, and watching many reviews by Flashaholic, I’ll just get him a new Opus charger. He has sticky buttons and one slot doesn’t work on the old one I gave him. He also uses it for vape 18650’s. And a pair of new Keepower 26650’s for the L6. I whacked a deer in his backyard close to dark. We looked all over and saw no blood. After dark he went back to his house and got the L6. We saw blood easily using it, and tracked the deer right down. It was about 25 yards away. Best not to replace something that works great for his needs, and he loves. Thank you!
I just bought him an Opus BTC-2000 for $30. It far exceeds his tech level. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y45QD79 Then again, his tech level may improve now that he has a charger with working buttons
