USB charger ecology

Had some very useful advice on this forum about headlamps so thought I’d share the following, more complex query. Sorry for any headaches resulting. All input gratefully received.

Context: I want to assemble a reliable, backpackable set of electronics. I’m careful with my gear but shock and water resistance is good.

I have a small effective solar panel (Ryobi, 14w) with two USB-A ports. On a sunny day it will power both of them at 4pointsomethingV and nearly 1A.

I have a low-power cellphone that charges happily from USB-A, a couple of rechargeable flashlights similar, a crank radio that can be hooked straight to the panel when I need news, and various tried-and-true devices that run on AAA batteries.

I plan to replace the existing slew of AAAs with Eneloops ie NiMH.

I figure that the way to get max use out of all this carefully-assembled tech is to buy i. a lightweight powerbank that fits into the zip-up wiring compartment in the Ryobi and ii. a USB-powered two-slot smart charger that can handle the Eneloops. I can then charge the powerbank and two AAAs or a flashlight simultaneously in the day, and charge the phone from the powerbank overnight.

I like the Klarus K5 for the powerbank but I haven’t settled on a USB AAA charger. And someone might suggest another approach?

Is this acceptable to charge your AAAs?

Thx for suggestion. I’m thinking better (smarter) charging, dead battery re-set and Li-ion/NiMH switching, like eg LiitoKala Lii-S2. But there may be something even better. I didn’t finish reading lygte-info.dk yet.

PS A further twist: I found a perfect set-up but it would rely on a no-longer-available item, the (v1.0) Black Diamond Revolt headlamp.

Here’s the story: my phone, flashlights, head lamp and camp radio are all fine – they’ll charge straight off the panel, or a waterproof powerbank. The weak spot is my slew of AAA-powered items, which mean carrying an extra USB charger that wasn’t designed for trail use.

Turns out that Black Diamond used to make a decent 3xAAA headlamp with a USB port that enabled it to double as a battery charger. Plus it’s IPX8 waterproof. Perfect for my purposes, but long out of production.

Maybe I’ll luck out and find old stock…
