What is the current best performing uv emitter for use in identifying rocks and minerals? It will be used in a s2+ body and a uv pass filter. Host and 1.5mm and 2mm thick filters ordered and I’m trying to determine what emitter would be best for rock hunting and identification.
I literally got the UV S2+. Black body, swapped the pill into a purple one, added the ZWB2 filter. It kills.
You can now order it in the purple body directly from convoy. You just have to install the filter yourself. I ordered two lights so I’d have one to give or loan out. I currently have a filter in one and the other one is unfiltered for testing and there is not really a whole lot of difference in my limited testing. There is a little bit of extra light spill without a filter. So I’m assuming the LED that convoy is using is a pretty narrow spectrum. Throw seems to be about the same. That may be important for some people. I’ve currently got a borrowed cheap multi (9) emitter that’s probably up in the UVB or higher range that doesn’t compare at all to the convoys.
I’m trying to find out what uv emitter is currently the best choice, not where to get a purple host.
Whichever one’s in the Convoy UV is great, imo. Dunno the exact model, but maybe someone can jump in. Doesn’t need the filter that much, as spillover is purplish and easy to ignore.
The one that comes with the SP31UV has too much visible green-white spillover. On a non-fluorescing surface, it looks like my Quark on moonlight. Great light otherwise, but needs that filter.
Yes I understand that. I did a fair bit of reading before I got the S2+. It seems that the rock people really like it.
If you want to buy directly fron Convoy, they currently offer Seoul CUN66A1B and it’s bigger (current/output wise) brother CUN66A1G as LED boards. They replace Convoys prior LG emitters and roughly perform about the same from what I gathered.
I got the CUN66A1G in a Convoy S2 7135*5 (which makes it slightly overdriven, datasheet says it likes 1.4A) recently and it puts out lots of UV. Gives me a headache even from indirect light in the otherwise absolute dark without goggles. I havent used it for extended times so far but it does dissipate some heat. Can’t tell you how it does if you use it for hours. It is likely the mainstream emitter with the most output atm together with its LG analogue.
Convoy’s stock S2+ come with the Nichia UV emitter which has to be driven a bit lower (comes with 7135*3 like Seoul A1B variant) and has been on the market longer. Some would say proven, others would say dated. It’s said to have the least stray light without a filter. I’d always use one anyways. Your battery will last longer with this one.
ok, i’ll ask another way. i want to add two emitters and make it a triple. i need to find two more that match. i have everything else.
would 3x cun66a1g work?
i’ll find out soon. good opportunity to use some parts I got from kiriba-ru a while back.
does anyone have the dimensions for the q8 lens handy?
Does anyone in the US have a 3535 footprint Q8 dtp copper led board to fit cun66a1g they’re willing to sell? I’m trying to find a us source to avoid the long shipping time from China and put it to use before I’m hospitalized again.
