Value of vintage Maglite

I have inherited a 1988 Maglite 6 cell still in its original packaging and was looking to see what it’s worth please. Serial number 3873901189 model S6D016. Thank you

you’d likely get more value from its use, i dunno that you’d get more than $50 for it, considering a newer iteration of the 6D is in distribution…I do hope you can find the right buyer, I remember the older maglites being thicker walled and heavier, for some reason. if you’re not in a hurry to sell it, just hold onto it for a while. are there any special engravings, like commemorations?

1 Thank

Agree, hold on to it. Value is not there.

Thanks for stopping by, terrbarn!

That Mag-Lite is not a flashlight. It’s a billy club with plausible deniability.

There are LED retrofit kits, but between the difficulty in sourcing C or D cells, and their weak capacity compared to modern lithiums like 18650s or 21700s, there isn’t much point. Other than the blunt-force instrument aspect, of course.

Sentimental value only, I’d say.

Those huge Mags are great to go clubbing, though. And I don’t mean dancing.

VOB has a shop that has a bunch of retrofit parts to bring Mags into the 20th century. Might be worth looking into.

As a functional light it has little value, so you’re probably best off selling it as a collector’s item (especially given the new packaging), in which case it doesn’t have a standardized market value.

Someone at a garage sale might find $10 too much for it, while some enthusiast collector on eBay might be happy to shell out $100 for this specific light. It’s worth however much the buyer is willing to pay.

Thank you all for your advice.

You are not the only one with a vintage Maglite. This one is over 20 years old and is limited edition.

Nice…

Like the others have said, it’s impossible to predict how much you’d get from selling it.

My opinion is, keep it, for the reasons the rest of the thread has said. Although if you want to make it a functional modern item, pick up a Lumencraft conversion kit. Powerful LED, good circuitry, and fat li-ion batteries for the old gal will have her glowing all day long.

Imagine a driver that could handle a stack of 6 (protected) 32650s. :joy:

That sucker would go all day long.

I’ve had D lights where 32s wouldn’t fit, but I think Mags are bored out enough to accommodate them.

hm…at times like this, maybe a hardware based solution? Stick a Thicc dumb resistor/transformer before the main driver, so the voltage is stepped down for the driver?

Might as well slap some wheels and a handlebar on it by then. It’s already the size of a small e-bike anyway. lol

Don’t tempt him, lol

Naw, not unless you want it to double as a hand-warmer… for Antarctica.

Get a step-down module that would step it down to, say, 3.5V if the LED’s voltage would be 3.3V, then a simple nanjg driver would be plenty. :joy:
