"WALK LIGHTS": Convoy M21 B-E-F w/ GT-FC40 4500k: 3 homeruns w/ Nichia-like tint. Comparison to M21E w/ XHP70.3 R70, Firefly E04 ❤ w/ premium quality + Lume + beautiful FFL LED. LATEST: $30 Nightwatch LW55 8000 lm 800m throw - LHP73B killer :-) ?

He also doesn’t offer S21E with SFT70 yet you can order one with XHP50.3 and ask for a swap.

There’s no reason he wouldn’t do the other way round in M21E.

I recall seeing your previous photos about this, very interesting observation. Maybe Cree is sending a 75+ CRI bin rather than the typical 70+, or maybe even 80+. I vague remember seeing some samples of new XPL-HI 4000K testing at 80CRI despite a lower nominal rating.

That would also explain slightly lower brightness on turbo than LHP531 at similar power except they were sold to Simon as J4 flux bin which should be just as bright.

  1. Thanks - this comparison to LHP531 would be intriguing. But XHP50.3 is a downgrade from my XHP70.3 HI R70 4000K with respect to output, no?
  2. Any idea about throw vs XHP70.3? Luminance for XHP70.3 HI is 124 cd/mm2 per Koef test. XHP50.3 HI R70’s luminance is not available.
  3. Tint of my XHP70.3 HI R70 4000k is very good. Hotspot very slightly rosy. XHP50.3 HI also good?

Yes, both LHP531 and XHP50.3 will produce about 10% less light at 30W.
XHP50.3 should outthrow both LHP531 and XHP70.3.
3. Convoy has XHP50.3 in 5D tint - it’s warmer than XHP70.3 5A, the rest is a bit of a lottery wether your sample will be around BBL, slightly above or significantly below. You definitely won the lottery with your XHP70.3 if it’s noticebly rosy.

1 Thank

The ones I got were all below BBL or rosy (50.3 4000K R70).

1 Thank

You got lucky because out of my three S21E’s with XHP50.3 4000K R70 one had pissy-yellow tint to it and the other despite looking neutral on lower modes, on turbo looked green compared to LHP531 side by side (interestingly - only on turbo).

That’s quite a tint lottery. Are the three LEDs came already installed with the lights at factory, or are they LEDs you bought separately and installed on the host yourself?

All of them came stock with the S21E, installed by Convoy.

1 Thank

I hope this bin chart I found at Cree’s web site is the correct one for XHP70.3 HI. This means bins 5A and 5D are the ones below the neutral tint line?

They can be very slightly above BBL but that shouldn’t be particularily green, just neutral. And of course you’re pretty likely to be below BBL, xA and xD tints from Cree are the ones to look choose. Convoy’s XHP70.3 HI comes in 5A, XHP50.3 HI comes in 5D, both R70 of course R9050 has it own completely different binning structure).

Thanks. This would be the bin for both “uninstalled” LEDs on PCB that he sells, and LEDs that already installed in a host like my M21E?

Yes, I’m pretty sure they come from the same pool.

Pardon me for the attention grabbing title - guilty as charge of sensational amateur “journalism”? OTOH this Nightwatch LW55 looks like it would have more output and outhrow LHP73B in same host, but of course there is more to a light than throw and output. Or is there  ?

At any rate, is it not mind boggling that nowadays you could buy an 8000lm 800 m light for $30? From a single LED? And it’s no sh***y ebay listing. LW55 belongs to the latest generation of Nightwatchs, again with thick beautiful aluminum host, flat runtimes c/w regulated driver, green AR lens, and beautiful beam.

I’ve done some brief measurements to make sure it’s ok; details to come. Posting so you don’t miss one of the largest discount I’ve seen from Nealsgadgets, 40% off using code ND40F. This should be a nice HOLIDAYS self gift.

2 Thanks

Sustained output is just 600lm which is surprisingly little for its size. I think Convoy M21C with LHP73B may be better.

1 Thank

This thread is really dangerous, because I don’t have a Fireflies light yet. I haven’t felt the need to buy anything in a little while, but I’m getting the itch.

1 Thank

I don’t see any mention of color temperature, tint, cri etc.
If it isn’t at least that which the LHP73B offers… it’s just lumens. And those generally don’t matter that much on a logarithmic scale when comparing the two.

Good point. Believe me as soon as a M21E with LHP73B appears, it would be in the shopping cart. Looking like soon since I hear 3v 20A driver is now available for M21E?

LHP73B also has the advantage (for me) of a warmer CCT, 5000k. OTOH Koef’s review shows Duv 0.0020, and if there is one thing I can’t stand, it’s a LED with green tint. I wonder what the verdict so far on this LED regarding its tint.

 Yes in particular Firefly E04 Surge is one of maybe a couple lights in my small collection that I would recommend without reservation as an all-around light, walk light, etc.

IMHO, this light is a laundry list of the most desireable features in a walk light: beautiful LED with top notch Ra and R9, top notch tint, and warm CCT, fantastic Lume driver. Beam is medium throw with good spill. Premium quality and a carefully crafted light throughtout. And it’s on sale.

For a more floody beam, E07 with FFL351A 4000k is equally fantastic.

Found the answer from a very good reviewer (Weerapat) HERE. 5000k is greenish; I’m wondering if this comes from the exact same LED bin as the one used in Koef’s test that has Duv 0.0020. 4000k should be a good (great?) addition to my collection.

Hopefully driver for M21E will come soon. Beam color comparison with my M21E with excellent slight-rosy tint XHP70.3 HI R70 4000k should be VERY interesting.
