So its only easier conceptually, lets hope you don’t accidentally let that slip next time someone wants to borrow something from you which is likely to eventually happen
Haliwa,
I don’t have one, otherwise I’d send you one. I hope you find what you need and get to do the mod. I’d like to see the results.
I had no idea folks are so protective of their tools!! I’m very surprised I’m this much out of touch!
I lend out my cameras, flashlights, lenses, strobes … All the time. With the exception of one bent filter I haven’t had a bad experience.
Now that I read this discussion, I am going to be careful asking to borrow tools. I don’t want to lose a friend or family member over it. :(!!
As has been said, you lend three items, two come back. You lend a perfectly working tool, it comes back with problems. People say it was like that when you lent it to me, as if you never use the tool yourself and wouldnt know. Spanners go out clean as a whistle, come back covered in grease/oil and whatnot. People who dont own tools, generally dont comprehend looking after them either. You buy nice polished spanners, and they come back after being dragged and tossed across the concrete. “Its a spanner, you cant hurt it.”
They cost money, good tools costs a lot of money. And people tend to be careless, and then shirk responsibility. Theres a reason they dont have tools, and replacing yours is not on their agenda either. You soon learn, as I have, to follow the old mans advice, never lend tools.
The loss of firends and family isnt about the damaged tool, its about the tool behaviour surrounding it. If you take responsibility for breaking it, replace it, things are fine and Id lend you a tool again no worries. Deny it, make life difficult like a petulant child with chocolate all over their little face denying they were in the bon bons, see ya. I wouldnt avoid Christmas etc because of it, but I will always remember the quality of that person. With friends, Id see the tool as money well invested. it was a cheap way to find out what that person is really like, irresponsible. Lifes too short, and i dont need to have that type of person around me by choice.
Thats one reason i am hesitant to borrow things, if i break it because i was rough with it i would replace it because its my fault, but if it dies because it was on its last legs i would feel obligated to replace it but i would be bothered by the fact i had the bad luck and am paying for a whole new tool when i got just a few minutes of use out of it and the owner is the one who used it from new to almost dead. It has never happened to me yet, but i’ve seen it happen to other people.
I don’t think most people have malicious intent when they borrow tools or other items, they just don’t have the consideration i would have in their place, when i borrow something i treat it as better then my own because i am being done a favour, but other people seem to treat borrowed items as whatever happens happens, so if i loaned a flashlight i would probably get it back with a dead battery and lots of anodization damage and that just won’t do.
I was given a george foreman type grill a few months ago and i have a friend who wants to borrow it to try cooking a few things to see if he would like to buy one for himself. I told him i won’t loan it to him but he is welcome to come over and try it, bring whatever he wants to cook (and i specifically said i am not looking for a meal out of him) but i don’t loan stuff. He was offended and i got the why don’t you trust me and what could happen whining. I wanted to tell him he is careless and knowing him i expect it will sit in his trunk for months covered by tools, get motor oil spilled on it and the non stick coating will probably get scrubbed by wire brush destroying it, but that would have caused a lot of friction in our friendship. He would not do any of this out of malice but is absent minded and can’t think ahead.
Jesus, itsa drill bit, not a $300 meter. I have my own tools, but I haven’t had a need for odd sized drill bits. Like I said before, I found one elsewhere.
The thread is no longer about you, hasnt been for a while. As you said, you got one. Relax mate, its a discussion regarding any tool item, from spanners to welders and engine cranes to Flukes. And even a George Foreman grill.
Dont know about you, but I have all of those except a Fluke and the grill.
Let me also please apologize for using your discussion to explain and explore my feelings and attitudes. This turned out to be a general discussion about tools, lending tools, general character, family, my unfamiliarity about how people feel about tools …….
As its been said earlier, this discussion had nothing to do with you past the first post. We all kind of took and exit off the main road and kept going. It happens sometimes here on BLF. Most of the times its harmless.
I sincerely hope that we haven’t offended or aggravated you in any way.
Hope to see you participating here and showing off your latest mod.
You’re good. I got my panties wadded up over something dumb. I may be new here, but I’m no stranger to forums and threads getting derailed.
I’ll probably get to the mini mag this weekend. Has anyone tried running one on 14500’s? I’ve got an extra solarforce xml2 u2 sitting around begging to illuminate the night.
