Wanted: Silent Clickie Switch

Hey everyone,

sorry, my english is a bit weak, but I am working hard on a comprehensible diction

I use a IR Flashlight for lighten my Night Vision. The Torch have a 17mm reverse Clickie Switch in the Tailcap, but unfortunately the Switch clicks fairly loud and is hearable in a good distance in quiet environments.

Is there any good-Quality and silent Switch like the Omten 1217? Max. Dimensions 17,8mm x 12mm, reverse or forward Click doesn’t matter.

How about one of these? you can buy in different types/sizes/ratings/illuminated, latching, momentary. I would imagine they are quiet - sound absorbed by the steel

From my experience these switches are not quiet.

i wish you much luck.
i have not found any.

McClicky can be very quiet.

Depending on your application, a simple and/or temporary solution could be to use the tailcap as a twist-on switch (assuming it has mechanical lockout)

I would suggest looking into a tape/pressure switch if momentary on is all that’s needed.

Do you have a picture or model of the torch/flashlight you are attempting to modify?

Not to be Debbie Downer, but keep in mind that the “snap action” is what helps preserve the switch and extend its life, by minimising the make/break time of the switch where it suffers most from arcing. The more the switch lingers with the contacts in close proximity, the more pitting, etc., it suffers, and the more its resistance goes up. So a good solid snap, hammering one contact into the other, then similarly yanking it off, extends switch life.

Some relays actually have separate ratings as to how much current the contacts can carry, and how much they can switch.

So… just something to keep in mind.

If it’s a C8-type light, use a pressure-switch. Or someone here was selling FET-based tailswitches, but dunno how quite the switch itself might be.

OK, thanks at all. That sounds not so good…

My Zebralight Headlamp has a very silent Switch in the head, I hope I find a similar one for my IR Flashlight.
My actual Workarround is to twist the Tailcap to switch on and off. Not perfect, but it works.

An “e-switch” can potentially be silent. In principal, this is due to the same reasons Lightbringer mentioned with arcing and contact acceleration/area/presssure. Your ZL uses an eswitch, which is just a very low current signal to the driver to turn on other solid state components that handle the full electrical load. There are designs by members here that likely can be adapted to your light that utilize an e-switch+FET+power source in place of the omten ‘clicky’ switch.

If you post a picture or reference to your IR flashlight, someone can likely help you find a solution

*also, do you need a latching switch, or is momentary only sufficient?

OK, thanks for the explanation. That gives me an idea.

Is it possible to flash the atiny13 on the driverboard with a custom Firmware, so I have after clicking on the flashlight two Modes.

- 0,001% (nearly off) or 0% if possible

  • 100% (on)

With that, I can turn on the Torch with the loud click before I use it and have a “virtual Softswitch”, when I need the illumination.

Depends on the driver.

Good idea, and i don’t see why it shouldn’t work.
From memory i recall that 7135s have a limit as to how low you can PWM them before they stop responding so it’s possible that on the lowest PWM setting the 7135s won’t fire at all. Somebody else or the search will have to provide more specifics though

Edit: - This thread could be a good starting point: Qlite 7135 driver moonlight not working

You can just disable the output and there won’t be any light at all.
