Wanted: Your Opinions for AO Folding Knife, Blade Under 3"

New to AO “pocket” folding knives,” but bought a Kershaw OSO Sweet on a whim and love it.

Budget $50 - $100. Much prefer traditional modified drop point shape. Blade coatings not important.

Started search for an AO plain edge with a slightly smaller (less than 3”) blade and quickly got swamped in the brands: CRKT, Kershaw, Benchmade, etc. Much prefer traditional modified drop point shape.

The budget is limiting, but you flashlight folks on BLF seem to find the best values at any price range. Heck, I’ve bought ~ 6 lights based on your recommendations and opinions!

Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

I did a Google search for

"modified drop point" kershaw

and my favorites knives that showed up are...

1. Kershaw 1605 Clash

2. Kershaw 1555G10 Cryo G10

EDIT: The Kershaw 1555G10 Cryo G10 is < 3", so try the Kershaw 1556TI Cryo II instead

(no picture this time :p )

The Kershaw Swerve and a couple other Kershaws probably fit your criteria as well.

As I’m just beginning my obsessive collection (Is there any other kind?) of AO folders, I’m thinking of trying a few different brands to compare/contrast to Kershaw.

Any non-Kershaws recommended within the above parameters?

I have a little Kershaw Ken Onion AO Model 1620 with G10 scales I bought back in '04 .

Sweet little knife .

I own two assisted-openers that are not Kershaw...

but I prefer my Kershaws.

(Sorry.)

In the lower end of the market
Ganzo G620
around $9 from FastTech. I bought one in each colour/blade coating. The Damascus is printed on but the black bladed ones are well coated. They work well as Assisted Openers, just a few openings and closings had mine working well. Easy to strip and re-assemble if needed as well.
I have a Buck QuickFire that is a solid knife, the plastic the scales are made from it definitely not up to G-10 standard. Shown as out of stock at Buck but you’d do better on price at a knife store anyway.
Sog have a couple of AO in their line-up that are supposed to be good but I haven’t tried them.
I also have a Kershaw Chive, very fast opener with the SpeedSafe mechanism, Kershaw have it well sewn up in the affordable AO category.

By the way, The Burgh, if drop point is good enough (instead of modified drop point) I could recommend some more Kershaws. ;)

… a bit of searching the web and reading reviews, some candidates (all on Amazon):

1.) Benchmade HK Knives P30 Assist Plain Edge Knife, Black
2.) CRKT 1105K Endorser Razor Edge Knife
3.) CRKT Fire Spark 1050 Assisted Opening Razor Edge Knife (Beautiful looks to my eyes).
4.) Benchmade 556 Mini Griptilian

Some are a bit over 3” blade. Not all are modified drop point. I am learning to be flexible in this intial search.

I’m sure I can find more, but was hoping than a few experts here on BLF had strong experiences with one or more AOs of these and/or other brands.

> 3" means over three inches. You might want to change the title of this thread. :)

The only assisted opener I own that's under 3" is the Kershaw 1555G10 Cryo G10 that I mentioned earlier.
