What are you listening right now ?

RDNZL, eh?

My old car had a Dvorak column-shifter, too!

That’s the stuff.

Back in the '90s, I bought a cheap plastic one at my local guitar store for only a couple of bucks. It’s a great bit of percussive kit for any non-musicians who may want to join in. Even better for folks who know what they’re doing!

Hint: KISS!

This track is sick. It reminds me a bit of John Carpenter.

The Doobie Brothers – NPR Tiny Desk Concert (live, 2025)

Although they are getting a little long in the tooth, The Doobie Brothers still have a lot of life in them.

It’s kind of a dilemma. The vocals, and some of the playing, is noticeably weaker than what they had in their heyday. Since the alternative, however, is for them not to tour at all, it is nice to see them out on the road.

Here is a preview of what you might see if you catch one of their shows. It was recorded just last November.

Their new stuff is alright too. The studio can fix it up a little.

Erroll Garner –  Concert by the Sea  (live, 1955)

Erroll Garner, one of the all-time great jazz pianists, was called “The Happy Man” by bassist Ray Brown. He’s got a light touch that just makes you smile. Garner, who plays entirely by ear, never learned to read music. Most of his songs feature extended improvisations.

Garner’s seminal live recording is Concert by the Sea. It opens with “Night and Day,” a Cole Porter tune from 1932. That’s the first song in the YouTube playlist below. If you let it play through, the you’ll get the entire album.

There are no horns in this classic jazz trio. Garner is joined by bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Denzil Best.

Wikipedia details the elaborate backstory behind Kate Bush’s “Cloudbursting.”

According to Wikipedia, “The song is about the very close relationship between psychiatrist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the mature Peter.” In the music video, the part of Wilhelm is played by no less than Donald Sutherland.

2 Thanks

Yes! Many years ago I read Wilhelm’s son’s book , who wrote his father’s story in " A Book of Dreams" (1973).
Fascinating background.
Extremely grateful to have witnessed Kate Bush perform Cloudbusting live during her Before the Dawn residency in 2014. Amazing voice and range.

Bob Dylan – 30th Anniversary Concert – "My Back Pages" (live, 1992)

Ah, but I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now.

“My Back Pages” has one of my favorite Bob Dylan lyrics.

The version below was played at a 1992 tribute concert, where many of rock’s titans came together to celebrate Dylan’s 30 years as a recording artist. The show was performed at Madison Square Garden, on October 16, 1992. Neil Young came up with the name Bobfest, to describe the show, and it stuck.

For “My Back Pages,” the list of performers includes:

  • Bob Dylan, Guitar
  • Roger McGuinn, Guitar
  • Tom Petty, Guitar
  • Neil Young, Guitar
  • Eric Clapton, Guitar
  • George Harrison, Guitar
  • Steve Cropper, Guitar
  • Al Cooper, Organ
  • Donald “Duck” Dunn, Bass
  • Anton Fig, Drums
  • Jim Keltner, Drums
  • Stan Lynch, Percussion
  • GE Smith, Guitar, Conductor

This arrangement was written by Roger McGuinn, who sang it with The Byrds. His jangly guitar sound is immediately recognizable.

I just now found out that Jimmy Cliff passed this past November, and I hadn’t heard a peep.

Forward Heaven, Jimmy… Respect.
