What budget flashlight for geocaching and kids

Hi,

I’m quite a noob about flashlights. I own a Fenix TK22 for nightcaches for Geocaching.
I tell this because we use the light for a long time (> 2 hours). The fenix runs a long time on the battery and does not become to hot. It’s perfect for the job in my opinion.
I would like to buy my kids a budget flashlight. I’m thinking about a maximum of about $15. Because i already own a charger for 18650 batteries, i think a flashlight for that kind of batteries is ok. I would like a flashlight that’s my kids can hold without burn themself because the head of the light becomes to hot. Besides this the flashlight must be really bright.

Can you advise me on what’s the best flashlight that I should choose?

I’ve seen, but I’ve read that the light becomes hot after 15 minutes:
UltraFire 503B Cree XM-L T6 860lm 5-Mode White Zooming Flashlight for 10,39 (on dx.com)

Any light over about 2A will get too hot to hold eventually, so for kids i would go for a lower brightness (think of high as a manual turbo), so i would look at a Convoy M1 at 2.1A, it will be plenty bright, if your using it outside and its moving it should be okay on high (should be, not guaranteed), plenty bright and has a good balance of throw/flood

The age of your children should determine which type of battery is used in their flashlight. I have had very good luck with the Convoy flashlights from Fasttech. If they are tenagers take a look at this model:

If they are younger than teenagers you should provide them a AA sized flashlight.

If they are very young go with a cheap Sipik SK68. If they loose it or break it will not break the bank.

I agree with Bort. Convoy M1’s are great. They are smaller than C8’s.

I also agree with you, the age and maturity of the kids is definitely a factor

Why not go wit a cheap headlamp with a q5 or xp-e emitter

Thank you all for your answers and thinking along with me.

I’ve taken a look at the headlamps. When i showed it, they told me they would like a flashlight more. (The fact that we’ve never had a headlamp, so we don’t know how it is plays a role too). Maybe in the future.

My kids are 8 and 10 years old. They are very careful of the stuff they own. So I trust them with a good one.

The Convoy lamps looks really good!
Both the C8 and the M1 have different models.
Where can I read what the difference is between T6-3C, U2-1B and T5-5C, T4-7C?

T4,T5,T6,U2 are the bins, the higher is the more efficient, but you can’t get every colour in every bin, the U2 is the brightest

1B is a cool (cold white), white with a bit of blue, 3C is a neutral white, mostly white with a hint of yellow (probably the favourite at BLF), the others you can find the ansi graph.
I would stick with 3C if you like softer white and 1A, 1B if you want the most lumens and don’t mind a harsher tint

U2-1b- Close to white. More green than blue.
T6-3C-More neutral. Foliage will look more natural.
T5-5C+T4-Very yellow/red

You can find out much more on flashlight Wiki. The color descriptions are just what my eyes perceive.
