Early last week I woke up with a slight sore throat and a bit of a runny nose. In normal times I wouldn’t have given it a second thought and assumed that it was just a slight cold. These are not normal times so I was concerned that it could be Covid. I initially avoided family members as much as possible (wife, 3 adult kids, and grand-daughter in our place) which was easy to do since we have a furnished basement unit with a fridge and bathroom. However after talking it over with everyone we decided that I wouldn’t go into quarantine mode since I didn’t have any other symptoms, and even those went away quickly. And since we had obviously been in close contact prior to the symptoms everyone would have been exposed in any case. Still I spent 90% of my time in the den (thank goodness for unlimited internet and streaming channels ). After a week I have no symptoms and nobody else has gotten sick so we assume it was just a slight cold as was the original thought. They could all be asymptomatic but I wonder how likely that would be?
I also live in a San Francisco district that hasn’t been hit all that hard. In a population of 45,891 there have only been 220 cases. SF Maps of COVID-19 Cases .
I’m certainly not the only person to come down with something and considered the possibility that it was Covid. So I was wondering how others responded in the past and how others plan to respond in the future.
I have had those symptoms before Christmas, in NL you can do a free covid test (swab in throat and nose) next day (at christmas day) i received a negative test result, so my family in law had no reason to stay home…
I thought about having a test done but wasn’t able to get one scheduled within a reasonable time-frame. One of my kids gets tested every week so at least we’ll know if she’s infected.
Nothing different than at any other time. If I’m sick, stay home. No need to run out and get tested for anything. If whatever I get ends up being serious enough that I need medical intervention, they can test me for whatever as a part of treatment.
You should already be on a good multi-vitamin and drinking water throughout the day, 8x8oz of water.
If you feel you are coming down with something:
Drink water throughout the day
Vitamin D3 - 1,000–3,000 IU/day
Vitamin C - 1,000mg twice a day
Quercetin - 250mg/day
Zinc - 50mg/day
Melatonin - 6mg before bedtime
Sunshine - 15min - 1.5hr per day mid-day, depending on skin color, maximize skin area exposed.
Selenium - Make sure your multi-vitamin has at least 70mcg
Low levels of any of the following are associated with worse outcomes:
Vitamin D3, Zinc, Melatonin, Selenium.
The following is not medical advice. Speak to your doctor first.
Ivermectin - Requires prescription
Some hospitals will not prescribe. Look to outpatient facilities as an alternative.
Although I normally know what I do when I go out (always with mask when walking in the city), and therefore I can assess my actions and interactions, I can always make mistakes or get caught “by accident” (you never know).
I normally check for my smell and taste to sense if they’re OK, when I feel some body raise of temperature out of normal I pick the thermometer and measure the temperature.
If I feel sick with some symptons associated to Covid-19 (loss of taste and/or smell, fever, pain in the body, headache, lung obstruction, feeling tired, …), I would/will certainly stay at my home (I live alone, but on weekends I normally go to see my parents and brother), I’d have no contacts with other people and maximize precautions at home (cleaning). I have some things I could cook during at least some weeks withouth needing to go out for shopping. So I’d stay inside and take care of me and of the other, by avoiding them
If other symptons like a runny nose, simple headache, are up to something, I’ll keep on checking but I will probably continue my “normal” life.
Awareness of my body is now, more than before, something important, and I guess that people can do something by paying attention to that and to actions/interactions
Stay safe
EDIT: Oh, yeah, I’d spend even more time here on BLF and checking all the flashlight manufacturers websites (I am not in social media channels…)
I had covid back in Nov. Pretty sure daughter brought it home from school as she was the first positive test in the house. When I went in for my test, I asked the nurse
what they recommended, and was told even if I think it’s just a cold, that I should get a test and quarantine until I get results. Luckily, the covid was very minor in my case, but my wife still has a cough. I have a cold right now that almost seems worse. Not gonna worry about it though
I grew up in a household that included a Sicilian grandmother, and her solution to not feeling good was to eat garlic every day until you felt better (along with a shot of “rock and rye” if it involved a cough). Good thing about a steady diet of garlic nowadays is that it tends to keep people at least 6 feet away!
I take a multivitamin every day, and supplement that with vitamins C and D if I’m not feeling 100%.
I couldn’t walk let alone leave the house for two months with vertigo. Couldn’t watch tv or read text messages for almost as long. I laid in bed, my wife had to help me to the bathroom. Thank goodness she kicked me out of my office and put a small desk in the bedroom. I just reorganized my flashlights and tested and charged my batteries. Lubed the orings. I tested all the pens in the house. Sharpened all the pencils. Played with the cat. And I still have COVID-19 to look forward to.
Well, I got the first shot 7 days ago. felt a couple different things over the weekend, nothing major. Sneezing… allergy type symptoms.
Then Monday I had a cough, my wife and kid were sick. Tueday they got The Test.
Today I hear my son tested positive. Didnt even punch in at work, came home. I have a test today.
I need two consecutive negatives to go back. Wife’s results are not in yet. No one here is ‘seriously’ sick. All reported symptoms are fairly benign, which is good.
The wife is almost unhinged though… near tears, since we are going to die now
