Orijen Original

Excellent dog food which my girls love. Pricy … but the best kibble type dog food on the market.

Orijen food contains at least six different kinds of fresh meat and also takes on a “whole prey” model, meaning the foods contain things like organ meat, marrow, and cartilage, all of which wolves would eat in their natural diet.

My Chocolate Lab wolves love their Orijen.

Orijen is mentioned multiple times, probably because it’s a popular brand. My brand Whole Earth is also named 1x
but my guess is that’s because it’s probably not as popular as other hi-end brands.

And I just bought a new bag this past weekend. I’m likely to stick w/ the same brand just not grain-free next time.

Also… I see you’re in Orange. I ride MTB at Santiago Oaks regularly (you prob recognize the spot from my avatar) usually start from the entrance at the elementary school on Serrano. Let me know if you ride…

Thanks for the info. I am very pleased with Orijen and have raised 5 very healthy Chocolate Labs to a ripe old age with this brand.

Yes. There was a recall of Orijen cat food in 2008 that was limited to Australia. The problems had to do with irradiation treatment, required under Australian law. … This brand has never been recalled in the United States or Canada.

Thank you for the offer for a ride-along … but my riding days are limited these days. Scheduled for a little knee surgery shortly.

I cook food for my dogs (purebred beagle black lab mix) with the recipes from www.planetpaws.ca and very lightly supplement with Open Farm dry kibble. A labor of love for two very real family members.

Open Farm has never had any recalls, nor are they on that FDA list…

This is, of course, a false cause logical fallacy; even a cursory glance at the FDA list shows animals with problems that were not on grain-free diets. The very first complaint on that list is but one of many examples.

Edited to add that I’m not trying to say there aren’t “problems” that have been associated with grain-free food, but rather just trying to say it’s illogical to lump all grain-free foods together because some (popular) brands are very frequent contributors to that list.

of course all those charts might be showing, is that owners who go out of their way to find special food for their pet, also go out of their way to report when one of their pets gets sick

since we dont know the number of pets that actually use taste of the wild, for example,
we dont know if the small number of cases is a small percentage of a large population that buys tasteof the wild

all we know from those charts is a few animals got reported as sick, and they were being fed what the owners believed was good food

so, did the food make the pet sick? cant say, not enough info to determine if its simply a matter of thousands of healthy pets and a handful of sick ones

until we know the percent of the population, the mentioned foods may be showing up simply because they have large market share

same with the peas and potatoes
a loving owner chooses grain free, and then reports when their pet gets sick

but think about it… were seeing numbers like 50 sick dogs that ate sweet potatoes, grain free

50 dogs out of how many, 100, 1000, 10,000?

the data sample may a very small percentage of the total population, and the reports may be coming from a very small percentage of owners. Most of the owners are reporting nothing, but they are not mentioned in the charts…

it has sweet potatoes, and some animals who got sick, used that brand
meaningful? Scientific?.. maybe, maybe not… depends how many Not Sick animals there are, so we know what percent is the sick portion… it looks tiny to me… I dont think its good science

The 2 raccoons eat table scraps and the cheapest dog food at whatever store I’m at has at the time. During the summer I catch small fish and crawfish for them. Their favorite is watermelons and fresh okra. Trash pandas are not real picky and will eat just about anything but you have to watch you don’t overfeed them.

Funny always had more requests of the skunk, most don’t care about coons. The skunk died at 15, most only live to about 10.

Bad pic since they didn’t look but this is proving they are tame(most people seem to think they aint) but thats my hand:

They only about 4 or 5 months old now, Raven (mine) and Sally (my son’s). Both are leash trained but lazy heifers would rather ride around on shoulders than walk. The cage they are in is about to be replaced with a covered 10X10X6 enclosure with a hollow log hanging as a nest box, a few large limbs hanging for them to climb on, and a 55 gallon drum cut in half long for them to swim in. They are house trained but I’ve learned my lesson having coons in the house the hard way.
