looks bad, taste of the wild has a tall bar of sick reports (but the actual number is tiny)

of course all those charts might be showing, is that owners who go out of their way to find special food for their pet, also go out of their way to report when one of their pets gets sick

since we dont know the number of pets that actually use taste of the wild, for example,
we dont know if the small number of cases is a small percentage of a large population that buys tasteof the wild

all we know from those charts is a few animals got reported as sick, and they were being fed what the owners believed was good food

so, did the food make the pet sick? cant say, not enough info to determine if its simply a matter of thousands of healthy pets and a handful of sick ones

until we know the percent of the population, the mentioned foods may be showing up simply because they have large market share

same with the peas and potatoes
a loving owner chooses grain free, and then reports when their pet gets sick

but think about it… were seeing numbers like 50 sick dogs that ate sweet potatoes, grain free

50 dogs out of how many, 100, 1000, 10,000?

the data sample may a very small percentage of the total population, and the reports may be coming from a very small percentage of owners. Most of the owners are reporting nothing, but they are not mentioned in the charts…

The 2 raccoons eat table scraps and the cheapest dog food at whatever store I’m at has at the time. During the summer I catch small fish and crawfish for them. Their favorite is watermelons and fresh okra. Trash pandas are not real picky and will eat just about anything but you have to watch you don’t overfeed them.

Funny always had more requests of the skunk, most don’t care about coons. The skunk died at 15, most only live to about 10.

Anyways, they got an extra bowl of food so they would sit somewhat still long enough to take a few pics. They thank you

Bad pic since they didn’t look but this is proving they are tame(most people seem to think they aint) but thats my hand:

They only about 4 or 5 months old now, Raven (mine) and Sally (my son’s). Both are leash trained but lazy heifers would rather ride around on shoulders than walk. The cage they are in is about to be replaced with a covered 10X10X6 enclosure with a hollow log hanging as a nest box, a few large limbs hanging for them to climb on, and a 55 gallon drum cut in half long for them to swim in. They are house trained but I’ve learned my lesson having coons in the house the hard way.

They are only good pets for people that can put the time into it. Best way I’ve heard them described is think of a toddler and a monkey that lives for 20 years. They aint like a dog or a cat where you can crate them while you are at work. Dang sure can’t just leave them loose because you will come home to holes in the walls and doors. Even if you try to crate them they get mad and ransack everything when you let them out. I’ve owned a few of them since I was a kid. Yeah they always keep a bit of wild in them even with ones like these 2 that have been bottle fed since before their eyes were open.

They are the funniest little animals. So far Raven has learned how to use the remote. If she doesn’t like whats on tv she will steal the remote and change the channel. Sally is bad about getting in the bathroom and turning the shower on if I don’t close the shower door.

Purina pro plan savor, I stick to the ones that follow the requirements set by AAFCO, which has a minimum requirement of nutrients required by the animal, which was done through scientific testing.

Interesting thing about the grain free diets and DCM is that there are in general 2 types of heart disease a dog can get, dilated cardiomyopathy (generally seen in large breed dogs), and chronic valve disease (normally seen in small breed dogs). With the increase in DCM related to grain free diets, it’s been noticed in small breed dogs, which historically dont get it.

Jon_slider does make a good point about sample size though, a study on dogs that has 30 participants would be considered a pretty decent sized one, the resources to do giant multi thousand participant studies just aren’t there. One last bit of info is that while grain free (and boutique diets) are likely associated with DCM, no aberrant cases have been noted in grain free diets from brands like purina, hills, or royal canin, which are the companies that follow the AAFCO recommendations.
