I am getting ready to order some pieces for a host and had a couple questions.
My host is a Uranusfire 816 (similar to the HD 2010- link below for reference) and I want a direct drive driver and am debating putting an XP-G2 or XP-L HI in it. What I am NOT certain of is what size the driver is 17 or 20mm? I tried measuring it but I don’t have much faith in my skills- my eyes aren’t great and I feel like I could easily be off by a mm or two.
2. All the driver specs sound the same to me: 2.4-3.2v, 7135xwhatever, 2 group/ 3 and 5 mode, etc…… QUESTION IS: What dd driver do I order to run an xp-l or xp-g2 at full tilt? How do I make sure I’m not ordering something crappy that you would find in an $8 Ebay T6 C8? I’ve bought drivers before that ended up being worthless but even after trying to read up and educate myself, they all still sound the same and I don’t know what to buy.
— I prefer to have either one mode(high) or 2 modes (low/high) and just want something for pure output and throw.
You want single mode and direct drive? Forget Using a driver Just bypass The existing driver and use it as a contact plate. If you need to use a driver then get any of the FET drivers at Mountain.
One mode is easy, bypass and the best battery you can get… KAPOW! pure lumen joy… Its a thrower, not like moonlight is a helpful mode…
Now to invent my bypass driver with recoil simulator when turned on… Some rubber bands, a chunk of copper, an old flintlock pistol… hmmmmm…. what else will I need?
By pass the existing driver ? Is that actually an option? If so, would I just resolder the emitter wires to different points on the driver or something like the positive to the edge of the disk and the negative to something else? I’m down to try whatever, lol
Money isn’t an issue, it’s just that if it comes down to it being easier to BUY a new driver, I don’t know what to get!! I appreciate the responses! Thx
Yup, I cannot find the thread, but basically you strip everything off the old driver. Then you run a positive wire (red) from the center spring on the pad to the + on the LED. The negative wire goes from the edge of the driver ring where the body contacts it, to the - side of the LED. Don’t forget to do a spring bypass on the tailswitch spring as well as the front spring.
One mode, direct drive, when you click the switch to ON.
Do some research here and see if this is what you want.
Ahhha… I think I can handle that… I think I’ve got a couple dedomed xml’s and even a dedomed sst-90 in my parts collection- might have to give this a try tonight : ). Thank you!
So…… finally got to it last night and tried with three different old drivers- the original which was blown, another blown one and a little junker salvaged out of an old zoomie - could not get a result with any of them. For the led, I had bought a 10 pack of cheap xp-g’s a while back and was using a brand new one. I tried several different contact points for each attempt but was not successful… I have two drivers and two xp-g2’s on order form kaidomain at the moment so that will probably be the plan at this point. The driver I ordered is a recommendation from another member from an older post of mine, so I think it should be a good fit. I dedome EVERYTHING nowadays because I pretty much only like throwers so the xp-g2 that goes into this will get a hair cut. I’ll absolutely take pics and update this thread on the build when the pieces arrive. Thanks for the interest!! Badger
What did you mean when you said “could not get a result”? Did the emitter die (turn bright blue then die)?
If you’re willing to potentially sacrifice one of those XP-G emitters, just try it outside the light, touch the emitter + to the battery plus and the emitter - to the battery - side with some jumper wires. The thing is I’m not sure (maybe others are) that you can direct drive an XP-G like that, because it may be pushing too much current to the emitter.
EDIT: Another possibility is that the tailcap switch might’ve gotten fried and died (done that before) because too much current.
I wired the emitter up to the blown drivers first, trying the direct drive configurations and tested with both the v tailcap on and then the old knife blade arcing to the side of the tube for function check, neither attempts would light the emitter. Then I wired it to the junk driver in the normal fashion and got light with 5 modes. Then tried direct drive with that emitter(meant to say DRIVER) but still couldn’t get anything to the emitter.
