I also hate twistys
I’m in the US, and the Trustfires I ordered just cleared customs yesterday after being stuck since Feb 6th - so I should be able to try them out soon!
I like the SC21 mini as well, I’m just hoping to find one that’s not as long for my keychain. I’m also not able to get the USB charging working for mine. I’ve tried many different cables. Is the button LED supposed to light up when charging?
Any requirements on the cord that you’re aware of? I’ve tried multiple C-to-C and A-to-C cords, but the light won’t come on. The status light does turn green when I turn on the light, so the LED isn’t burned out. The only other thing I’ve noticed is that some larger cord heads don’t physically fit well, but I’ve tried plenty of smaller cord heads as well.
I just tried three random A to C cords from different devices. One a sound machine, one from a charger, and one from an unknown device unrelated to flashlights. All three started the blinking red light indicating charging.
Have you looked into the charging port with a flashlight and a magnifying glass? Look for any pins that might be bent or any tiny little pieces of copper that look out of place. Also, have you tried different wall warts that you plug your charging cables into?
On some flashlights, the charging port is slightly smaller than the plastic on the charging cable and can prevent the cable from plugging in completely.
I still run the Group Buy Convoy S2+ Cree XPG3 3A w/clip Lumencraft Matt / vestureofblood. Currently sees bedroom nightstand duty and occasional rural family visits for limited white-tail deer spotting. With the early thread design I couldn’t swap to 18650 host for better runtimes. I’m not he most tint sensitive enthusiast. The compactness and even beam flood suit me well.
I’ve gone the other way, from 18650 to shorty tube and 18500. Gotta pull the spring on the driver and replace it with a nubbin, possibly solder-blob if you got the clearance, then similarly on the tailswitch. I toyed with the idea of using Bellville washers for “springiness”, but never got arsed enough to actually do it.
Point being, a shorty tube for a 18350 can be “opened up” inside to fit an 18500 and get that much more runtime.
From left to right: Emisar D4v2, Sofirn SC21, Trustfire MT10, Trustfire MC1, Fenix E16
Initial observations:
The Fenix E16 really is small, and nothing with a comparable capacity battery can come close nowadays. I guess that’s the price we have to pay for onboard charging.
The MC1 seems really nice, the only downside is the proprietary charging cable.
The rubber flap over the charging port on the MT10 feels really flimsy, but otherwise its very nice as well.
More testing to come…
Also, thanks for everyone’s tips on the Sofirn SC21’s USB charging issue. I cleaned the port and I think it might be working now. I noticed that if I plug the light in when it’s already on then the green charging light turns off. That seems to indicate that the charger is being at least acknowledged, so hopefully it charges. Running down the battery now so I can test.
