What thread pitch do flashlights use?

I’m getting some bits together slowly to add to my lathe, since I can’t thread using the new fangled method (no feed) I’ll be turning the chuck by hand, I’m just gonna have to try it with a good old tap and die.
due to the rather high price I’m just going for a 22mm at this time since it matched with the tube I have, but what should the pitch/tpi be? This would be for head/tailcap (I haven’t got anything to measure that fine)
I have seen 22x2.5, 22x2.0, 22x1.5, 22x1.0 and 22 x 0.75 (one of these last two would be my guess).
If it is 22x0.75 / 1.0 then which drill should I use for the tap (can’t find this size anywhere in books!) and what size should I turn the OD down to for the die? (a little trial and error here too I’m sure)

22x1 needs drill 21mm
22x0,75 needs 21,25mm

P60 from memory is 20mm x 1mm. Good luck on your mission. :beer:

Thank you guys, as I thought. I think I’ll go for the 1.0 one since the 0.75 is less easy to find (both parts) and also if it gets too fine it may just screw right off eventually lol! I had been cannibalising old broken lights for threads, but apart from being a bit of a waste its not exactly the way to go lol! I’ll get a few more as time goes on but it’s the 22mm first.

Dang no halfnut feed for threading? Single point threading is one of my favorite things to do on a lathe. Seems to be a dying skill even among machinists. Hell Ive got kids that are afraid of parting tools too. Whats real fun to do though is hobbing threads on a VTL.

No, I’m afraid this J.Lambercier & Co lathe is toooo old (it is a pig sometimes not having a feed though) , Swiss maybe 1900 ish (possibly before) - everything else about it is fine though and despite it’s age it’s made way better than a cheap mini lathe is today. I reckon it’s worth a bit too as I cannot find one single mention anywhere, found the factory (now shut) in Geneva but that’s about it. Most things nowadays you can find on the net, but not this lol!
Worth asking I suppose, but have you any idea what that thing with the red wire is going to it? It’s like a ceramic thing that has a spiral groove running from top to bottom in it with twisted wire wrapped all the way around it - when it’s under stress it glows red sometimes lol! a resistor of some type? I’d like to replace it (I imagine it must be live) with something safer!

That should be the resistor heat sink for the motor, It dissaptes heat from the load putting resistance on the electrical. Prevents the wiring or the motor overheating and melting insulation and causing a short. I have a giant one on the wall at work that when the lathe is under heavy load, or you engage the spindle it glows also. Sometime quite hot if I have large stock in the lathe. That is quite the nice little lathe though! I bet its far more accurate with a tolerance than any small lathe you can buy today!

Cool, so it is a resistor - I guess if it’s not broke and all that…. Yes it really is a nice little lathe, short of the feed. There are 2 forward speeds, and 2 reverse on the switch - and then obviously there’s the belt speeds to alter.
When it warms up it’s getting a splash of new paint!
I got so many extra bits with it and I don’t know what most of them even do, I may up some pictures on here at some point to ask what they are! There’s one bit with like 15 or so little gears on which would appear to fit in that slot somehow on the front or back of the bed also flex shaft dremel type affair which I’ve not used as yet which may or may not be something to do with it. A tonne of gears which I can’t see any use for, the only gears I can see are inside the pulley to the left side of the belt (1st speed) on the lathe (which is also a dividing head?) has loads of holes in and a locating pin to lock it. They don’t move though? the gears that is. Could talk all day about it, sorry!
I just ordered one of those cheap Chinese quick change tool posts for £20 which has mixed reviews, should be fine for this size lathe though as only really doing ally, and it beats shimming up every time you change tools, plus I’ll have 4 tools instead of just one! We’ll see how that works out as it hasn’t arrived yet.

You have done a nice job of setting the lathe up G0OSE. I cant help with all the extras but for basic turning you should be able to do ok. 22mm should do ok on 18650 lights. I know 20mm is to small.
