Well today I reflowed an LED and also de-domed the same one. All I wanted to do was secure my XM-L2 on a Noctigon to the end of a copper tube. I turned the MCPCB over on a wood block to pre tin the back of the Noctigon. Maybe I should not have done that, maybe I used too much heat. Anyhow when I turned the star over the LED had fallen off in the recess in the block. Hmmm.
So after a look at some topics here I managed to position and reflow the LED. I bumped the dome with my tweezers after the reflow and the dome was soft. I used the tip of my Xacto knife to flip the dome off. I had read about that one day a week or so ago. It came right off, fairly clean.
Next I soldered driver leads to the Noctigon and applied current. Hey! It still works! It doesn’t get much better than that! Looks somewhat warmer but that is okay for this project. I’ll check out the actual color tonight when the shop can be darkened completely. So what I initially thought was a disaster turned into a learning experience. A positive experience at that. ![]()
