Elk near our cabin

So, I’m curious. Do elk in your area get fed by humans so they ‘reside’ in neighborhoods? We have some of the most prized genetics for whitetails because the antlers are huge in this part of South Texas but the deer are pretty scarce during the day. In other areas like the TX Hill Country, you’ll see them all day and night.

It is illegal to feed wild animals in Los Alamos county; as far as I know people usually obey. Deer are so plentiful that they browse all over town and love the golf course. I’ve not seen many elk within the town, though. Bears, coyotes, raccoons and bobcats have been seen in town.

The video was not in the town or the county but in a neighboring county 20 or so miles away. That is not a heavily built up area; neighbors are scattered. ( two to three miles north is the Valles Caldera National Preserve, home base for some 2500 to 3000 elk.) We do have a salt lick block near our cabin that is used by deer and elk.

(The town is built on a series of flat finger-like mesa tops with canyons between the fingers. So there are lots of places in the canyons for the animals to be alone, as there is no housing in the canyon bottoms.)
