I’m basically learning too lol. Tomorrow I’ll do a write up on how I have been getting my results, it may be flawed lol. I need to set up a more consistent way to get readings than laying out a tape measure and eyeballing about a little less than 80” lol…
If you have the 860 lumen version of the EA4, it’s 20,000 cd so measure the hottest part of the hotspot from 2m away w/fresh batteries in the light, in between 30s to
2 min of turning it on. It should read close to 5000 lux. If not either your light or meter is off, probably your meter.
measured at 2m, i got 4330 on the meter before converting to 1m. but also they are not fresh batteries. ill try it with new ones tonight
edit: and i also have the ea4w, and i thought i saw somewhere that it had less lumens than the ea4, but everywhere seems to have the same specs for both…
Found out the other day that the reading of this meter even goes over 100.000 lux (I will try to find out on a sunny day + bright flaslight how high the reading goes, my guess: 200.000). Iwould not be surprised at this point if all those chinese lux-meters all have the same inside with a different housing.

Not sure exactly what it is for the EA4W but it should be less. 4330 at 2m is 17,320 cd.
I’d also measure at 4m and 6m, calculate all back to 1m and compare. Then test other lights you have that manufacturers have published ANSI/NEMA FL-1 specs for. Individual lights vary and manufacturers aren’t always honest but I’ve found the ANSI/NEMA FL-1 specs to be pretty accurate, at least with my lights.
I think it’s important to see if your meter is giving you good readings because some don’t, and it doesn’t necessarily go by price. I’m getting as obsessed about lux meters as I am about lights and already have three with two more on the way.
Haha… Far from a tint snob. Just never had a actual “warm” led, and wanted to see what the fuss was about lol. To be honest in actual use I hardly ever notice the tint…
I’ll play around with it some more. I think my energizer lights have ansi ratings online, the ea4, 7g2cs although I hear it is very badly inflated… I might have a few more…

Energizer was on the committee that developed the standard so they probably do.
They all have lumens listed but none have cd listed. Maybe I can reverse calculate by throw distance they are spec at… I just went to energizer.com and the energizerlighting.com I think it was on my phone, so not a real extensive search
Exactly. ANSI throw is for .25 lux, so when lux = .25, cd = m^2*.25 = m^2/4
Using the EA4 as an example, it throws 283m so cd = (283*283)/4 = 80089/4 = 20,022
so i found throw distance for the energizer high intensity 2xAA, states 90m
so i do
90*90=8100
8100/4=2025
2025/4=506.25 cd?
seems low…
Seems low because it is. The light throws 90m so (90*90)/4 = 8100/4 = 2025 cd.
From the inverse square law, the surface light intensity at 2 meters would be 506.25 lux.

ill take readings of that tonight and a few more with the ea4w. dont think i have any others that are ansi rated… the 7g2cs, but i read its grossly inflated, and specs are listed at 8.4v and i dont have 16340s
i just got 17480@1m with the ea4 again.
i got some measurements the high intensity and 1w tactical energizers should be. ill put some new cells in them tomorrow and check it on them
Not sure what bins Nitecore’s using but that could be right, plus individual lights vary. Was your measurement taken at 2m (and calculated back to 1m)? Have you tried 4m? I’ll bet you’ll get a slightly higher reading. Too bad you don’t have more lights with ANSI specs to cross check with.
for my energizer high intensity 2xAA light rated at 90 meters throw, i just got 2232@1m with two new energizer lithium primaries in it

havent really tested out any lights with it except my “ray-o-crap” and my small sun and my ea4w lately. surprisingly consistent, it will pretty much always bring my ea4w into the mid 17kcd range
(i lernt today that when its calculated back to 1m its called candela, not lux… im not going to go back and edit all my readings i posted to make myself look smarter because im not) :bigsmile:
anyone know how to calculate how many meters a light should throw from the candela? or is it not possible…?

i need to figure out how to program in linux and make an program to put in lux and meters taken at to calculate candela and throw easier. used to program in vb6, anything in linux that easy?
