I don’t run RAID, but I do have a backup drive for every data drive, so I’m getting half the total storage as well.
Getting NAS drives is a good idea (for some people) and another good idea is getting WD drives instead of any other brand, especially Seagate.
Mine are WD Red drives. It depends on your use-case, if your storage drive isn’t running 24/7 NAS drives may be overkill. So far mine have been running for eight years virtually non-stop and they’re still healthy.
600 is a lot of movies to put on a two-bay NAS
Are you keeping just the main video and audio files and leaving all of the secondary tracks and extras? I’m also curious about the makeup of your collection. Is it a mixture of DVD, BR, and 4k? Mine is almost all BR and 4k.
Just the main movie and soundtrack, any extras I’ve watched once already and I don’t often re-visit them. I am keeping the original discs anyway though, the NAS is more for convenience. The vast majority are DVD, a handful of Blu-Ray, no 4K. After ripping the movie I run it through Handbrake to compress it. You’d need to be looking at the uncompressed rip vs the compressed side by side to tell the difference, but I only have a 48" TV and I’m sitting four metres from it, so by then they look the same.
I buy a lot of movies on DVD still as they can be picked up for next to nothing on eBay, car boot sales etc.
I don’t rip movies, but I do use VidCoder to encode video.
VidCoder uses HandBrake, but I like VC better.
With VC, you can enlarge the dimensions of a video, but you cannot do that easily with HB.
I know that enlarging the dimensions does not increase the video quality, of course, but I sometimes get video that’s 720p, and I prefer to encode all video at 1080p.
I encode x265 at a fairly low bitrate, but it looks great on my 32" 1080p screens.
I find that DVDs generally look pretty blurry on my 55" screen at about 3 meters, but some DVDs are better than others.
The difference between a DVD and BR should be night and day, but that isn’t always the case because some movies do not get the attention they deserve. Sometimes the same transfer just gets upscaled for new physical releases. Sometimes the film was just lacking in detail to begin with and there isn’t a lot more detail to be had. And sometimes the people doing the transfers just do a bad job.
Like you said though, a smaller screen further away would make differences hard to notice too. And besides, lots of less popular stuff never made the jump to BR, and lots of BR stuff will probably never make it to 4k.
I have seen some very good DVD transfers that genuinely made me question how much I’d gain from the BD instead. That said, the original DVD release of Memphis Belle looked like it was transferred from VHS and the first two or three Harry Potter movies weren’t much better.
The Lord of the Rings movies have drastically more detail on Blu-ray imo. Makes sense though, they are very long and are squished onto a small storage space with some of the most extensive special features ever created. I’m speaking of the Extended Editions. I’ve only ever owned the Extended Editions.
With LOTR the extended editions are the way to go, the extras on those were spectacular too. Given the extra storage available on a BD over a DVD it does irk me that they still split each film into two. I joined them together after ripping so I now have three very long movies instead of six shorter ones. They are an exception in that I’m keeping the discs in the original packaging and the bonus discs because the presentation was so good.
Back in the day, the Buffys, the Angels, and the SG1s, all came in hard cases (5 sides, open back) that however many other thinner cases could slide into. Later seasons, they all got cheap and were just the thin cardboard box with the plastic shells inside.
“Band Of Brothers” came in a kick-ass metal case.
I miss those days…
I saw Trap (2024).

The previous movie I saw, The Watchers, is directed by one of M. Night Shyamalan’s daughters.
This movie is directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
I didn’t care for the previous movie, but this movie is amazing!
Also, a different daughter of M. Night Shyamalan stars in this movie, and M. Night Shyamalan has a small part.
Are we confused yet?
My sister recommended both movies to me, so I decided to watch them back to back.
This movie starts out as a drama/concert movie, and it accomplished that quite well.
After a short while, the movie becomes a horror/mystery/thriller, and it gets even better.
The acting is top notch.
The music is superb.
I don’t normally like pop music, but the pop music in this film is done very well.
I’m not going to get the soundtrack, but the music works for the movie perfectly.
The bad guy of the movie is very likeable.
I think most viewers will root for the bad guy for most of the movie, which is a difficult thing to pull off in a movie that’s as good as this one.
Parts of the movie are not completely believable, but the movie is fun to watch (which is what matters to me.)
I really can’t praise this movie enough, even though I’ve run out of things to say at the moment.
EDIT:
Oh, yeah, there’s a short bonus scene early in the credits that you don’t want to miss.
Beautiful cinematography, the story is interesting, it’s not typical black and white good vs evil. however it’s another unfortunate victim of studio interference but it’s still entertaining and totally watchable. I’ve been quite a fan of Eggers since The Witch and I’m looking forward to his take on Nosferatu.
I hadn’t heard there was interference with that one, I’ll read into it. I saw this one in theater. Very interesting movie. The two main issues I had with it were 1) it was too much like Hamlet, and 2) it chose to go full-realism at the least satisfying points.
I’m also interested in checking out Nosferatu in Dec.
I just discovered that Hamlet is based on a Scandinavian legend . The familiar story still feels a little tired though.
Went to rewatch for the first time in years. It’s still beautiful but I’m more aware of what it means now and that ruins it for me somewhat. This concept of unification and consolidated power being more important than the freedoms of countries or individuals is something I just can’t get on board with.

I saw Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

This movie is excellent.
Like the previous Deadpool movies, it’s rated a hard R for plenty of violence and tons of swearing.
The acting and the music are superb.
The action sequences are amazing.
The previous Deadpool movies might be a bit better, but I really enjoyed this 2024 movie.
Many recent Marvel movies are terrible, so this film is a welcome surprise.
It’s “out” already?
It’s been available to me since September 30th.
Ah, yes, I just checked now and it’s available for… purchase.
I never got arsed to look because I haven’t seen any of the other ones, but heard this one is pretty good, so…
