I pulled up the Cree charts. At 3 amps with next to the very brightest rated bin 1335 lumens, at 4.2 amps 1748 lumens. Still very good output.

Andybibbville, with enough power the XHP50.2 LED is capable of 2500 lumens but that driver will only provide enough power at max to produce 1500ish lumens, or as Texas Lumens points out 1335ish lumens.

A P60 drop-in by default does not make good contact with the P60 host body so it doesn’t transfer heat away from the LED too well, more power means more heat so if you were to use a driver that provided enough power to produce 2500 lumens you would need improve the heat transfer path between the drop-in and the body or the LED and drop-in would very quickly get hot enough to damage components.

There are 2 possible reasons why the description states 2600 lumens when it should say 1500 or less. The first is that the seller is exaggerating the performance of their product, it’s common for sellers to do this but with no experience of this seller i can’t say whether this is the case or not.

The second reason is that they have confused the 3V XHP50.2 output with the 6V XHP50.2 output.

Lumens are a product of power, the more power the more lumens (within the LEDs working range).
Power(measured in watts(W)) is a product of voltage(V) and current (A). W=VA. This means that if you double the current from 3A to 6A while keeping the voltage the same you get double the power. It also means that if you double the voltage from 3V to 6V while keeping the current the same you also get double the power.

So, with a 3A input, a 6V XHP50.2 will get double the power of a 3V XHP50.2 and will therefore produce more lumens. Most information online relates to the 6V XHP50.2 so it’s possible they have quoted the expected lumens from a 6V XHP50.2 running at 3A rather than a 3V XHP50.2 running at 3A.

Thank you Marc E for explaining that so eloquently, that makes sense for them to do that. Even with 1300 to 1500 lumens it’s still going to be a great drop in. Hopefully will get more runtime from it, since it’s not being driven so hard.

I’ve ordered one too. It’s the first XHP50.2 drop in I’ve seen on sale. Should be a slight improvement on my T6 drop in (2.5amp draw).

I have already modified a couple of flashlights by replacing the XML2 with a 3-volt XHP50.2, without making any other changes; the drivers provided 2700mAh; the lumens in addition to an XML, there are, and the beam of light is more flood (at least with the parabolas of default with a diameter of about 27mm); I think the performance of an XHP50.2 is higher, with the same Amp, at 3 volts.
Overall I am satisfied, in fact, slowly, I will bring other flashlights to the standard one.
Regarding the P60, yes, the problem is the greater heat, it is a must to fill the space between the P60 and the head with metal plates (I use aluminum, beer cans) but certainly copper would be better

Okay thank you BlueswordM, I don’t know these kind of things.

This is a new 3 volt edition of the XHP50.2 so it runs at 3v and this driver is a standard 3 amp driver and should produce around 1000+ lumens probably higher maybe 1400? . If it was the 6v XHP50.2 LED at 3amps it would do over or around 2500 lumens but then it would be using a boost driver not a 7135 driver. I have bought a few driver from this store and they are decent/good. Good build quality and decent parts used but i found the 7135 driver i bought was not using an Attiny chip. If you bought one of these drivers you should get around 2500 lumens its got 6 extra 7135 so about an amp and half extra. Page Not Found - Aliexpress.com

At one of the cabins we camp at, its power is limited to a single solar panel. This keeps an AGM trolling battery charged. It lights the cabin on 12 volt system plus a little 200 watt inverted. That battery alone can charge items for a long time and be recharged on a car. Might be an idea for long power outages.

I don’t have a car and a solar panel. I don’t want to carry a battery case with 3 spare batteries inside it. If you have a look on goggle a Solarforce gladiator is a 4 x 18650 length P60 drop-in host. Nobody wants to change batteries every now and then in the dark. Many thanks for you opinion.

I have a SolarForce Gladiator with one of their 1-4 cell dropins. No extra runtime with extra batteries over using 1 cell. They just wasted the extra voltage in the driver. I know of no 17mm driver that lowers voltage and increases run time by raising current potential. One possible option is to use a Cree XHP35 LED that is build for 12 volts and much lower current for equal output.

The other I added 4 7138 chips bring it up to 4.3 amps and it really brings this dropin to life. As is maybe 1100-1200 lumens, extra chips 1500-1600 lumens. My 12 7138 chips dropin from Pflepro actually measured 1790 lumens at 4.56 amps. The dropin is definitely worth it and works very well. With the extra chips it needs a good wrap of copper and is very much worth the effort.

Your output is going to be around 1 amp. You might not get any extra run time with more than one cell. The LED change out in the Dropin is going to only need a soldering iron, nothing fancy. You’ll need a 20mm star with LED.

Hi, I’m new to flashlights… already starting to get addicted.
I’m assuming this XHP50.2 light is designed to be used with a single 18650 battery, since the listed voltage input is 3.7V~4.2V.
But are there other battery options for this LED in a P60 flashlight? For example, what happens if I power the flashlight with two CR123a batteries instead?
