xhp50.2 under TIR optic?

have never used 50.2, but this things are common for any modern led.
pros:
big hotspot
no beam artefacts
low or no tint shift
cons:
small cd\lm in comparation with same size reflector - lower throw
80-85% efficiency, if you want 50W output be ready to melt your optics
I have used several different 30-35mm tirs, they work with cree leds very well, usually if you was annoyed by greenish tint of corona with reflector you will forget about this and wonder how pretty tint is.
I would also say that if you have experience with 20/24mm triple/quad tirs, please dont make conclusions about all TIR lenses. 3-4sq.mm die just cant be focused by 10mm lens. 30-50mm TIR work completely different.

I recall the Surefire M6LT had a CREE XM-L and L2 under a large TIR. This XHP50.2 is the newest 5x5 CREE led? Neat concept and good if the entire package is less than 50 bucks.

Hey everybody, I’ve got 7 Eagle Eye X6 lights now, and not a one of em anywhere near stock… imagine that! Tonight I took lumens measurements in the lightbox then went outside and got beamshots. Take a look at that thread. DB Custom has modded some lights (and in some cases had to sand/bore out the TIR, dedome LED, etc to make it fit) using TIR. Both XHP70 and XHP50.

However this worries my a bit, although I’ve seen 4000+lm triples in TIR.

I don’t think I’ll be anywhere near 50w, my plan is for a FET/DD driver w/zener mod (2S cells) to drive an xhp50.2. I can limit watts/amps by the cells I use, starting with protected 26650 cells, but I do want to try high drain cells as well.

I should have gave a bit more information…

The TIR I want to use is about 36mm. It’s a Led Lenser and I have no idea the beam angle degrees, seems pretty narrow spot though.

The opening at the base for the LED is aprox. 6.5mm, hopefully it can at least fit the xhp50.2 dome without modification, I estimate it will be okay since the die size is 5x5mm so I guess the dome shouldn’t be larger than 5mm (I don’t have any xhp50 now to check)

If it would need enlarged I could drill out the opening in the base but not sure how that would affect the beam, plus I don’t want to ruin the optic.

Yes XHP50.2 is the newest 5×5 CREE led.

The cost of parts should be no more than about $25, this is a complete rebuild of an older light, a Led Lenser V2-TL Tactical Light (3C)

Thanks for posting, some good information there, I had read that thread a few years ago too.

Dale shows an MT-G2 with Ledil Iris Optic (2239lm) so that compares well to my inquiry, however I went through the whole thread and couldn’t find any mention of XHP70 or XHP50 in a TIR other than one statement:

“XHP-50 domes won’t fit under the CUTE-3. I had to shave em” …

But he’s talking about small triple optics. Hopefully I won’t need to de dome or bore since I’m using a larger reflector.

He does show an XHP-70 with a Minnie-M from Ledil, but the Minnie-M is a reflector not TIR, however very informative for an MT-G2 option. I wasn’t aware of those reflectors and found them on amazon too. Amazon.com

I did check it at mouser, but at only $3.54 and free shipping amazon is the best for me, plus I’d receive it in 2 days.

For now I’m going to stick with the xhp50.2 in the TIR for this build, but at that price it’s almost worth just getting one should I decide to change to an MT-G2, but I would have to take some more measurements to make sure it would fit, plus I’d also need to buy a glass lens. It’s a short reflector. Also something to consider for putting MT-G2 in other lights with 35mm reflector size.

I’ve used the ledil Iris with a sliced XHP50. There are two models of the Iris TIR, one with a larger emitter opening for XHP50 and similar emitters and one for XPL type emitters.

The beam was really good. No donut hole because the top surface of this Iris TIR is frosted. It had similar throw to an OP reflector of the same size, but a larger beam, as expected from a TIR.

Sounds good thanks, hopefully I’ll get a nice beam from the Led Lenser optic.

I went to Ledil .com to see those different sizes to try and find out the emitter opening size for XHP50, but unfortunately (and surprisingly) I couldn’t find the information anywhere, I looked at the mechanical drawings in the datasheets too but they’re hard to decipher, closest I found I believe was the distance between the alignment pins on on of them. There’s a lot of models in the iris line.
