XM-L darkspot?

I’ve noticed this in two lights now using this LED, if pointed at a surface <50cm away. What causes this “darkspot”? Note this is only visible when the beam is directed at a surface up close.

At lower exposure:

The beam focuses only at a certain distance, that's why throwers are often measured at a distance of 2m and more.

Take off the reflector and you'll notice the "darkspot" is the same brightness as the pure flood of the LED, as at that close of distance that spot isn't receiving any reflected light.

And, when playing around with reflector positioning/focus, looking for that dark spot is a sign that you're getting close to optimum for best throw. Some reflectors just don't have the right shape to get there, but most of them will.

Thanks for starting this topic Chloe. I have the same thing with my modded XM-L2 Nage thrower. I was going to reflow a different LED, but now I know its normal.

Thanks, everyone! I will have to go play with reflector positioning now.

So is it shape of reflector or position of reflector? I’ve got Convoy C8 OPfrom FT and replaced with FT SMO reflector and got the flower darkspot. Changed to SMO from KD and the dark flower is gone. I get the idea that the reflector was standing too high in respect of emitter. not sure tho.
