so i was down in the basement with my my two boys and was sharpening a couple of my knives.(brous blades reloader to be exact) My youngest said ow, so i naturally look over to see what is going on and lost focus on the task. NEVER LOSE FOCUS. The knife slipped from the sharpner and caught my small finger on my left hand. i was really lucky today, really lucky. They had to put a tourniquet on my finger to get the bleeding to stop. about 1 minute ofter the tourniquet, I almost passed out. not a good sunday, but learned a lesson. Sharpen you knives with out distractions.
I’ve tried to tell my family that when I’m sharpening a knife they should give me a break, but do they listen?
Maybe now your family understands…
The downside of a razor sharp knife that slices whatever you want cut like it’s hot butter is of course that the knife can’t distinguish between “things” and YOU! That is gonna be so sore!
(I have scars from similar wounds, slippage, from 40+ years ago)
We all learn some lessons the hard way. I got myself good once when drying a knife I made after I finished washing it.
Good luck with the recovery. Hopefully you don’t notice any nerve damage. Would I be correct in assuming that you’re right handed? If so at least you’ll still be able to do 90% of the important stuff even with that pinky out for the count for a while.
Well, maybe if she had you busy in the bedroom you wouldn’t be carving on your fingers in the basement!
You could rearrange her shoe closet? Build new shelves for her purses? Clean out the stuff under the bed and organize the chest of drawers? See? Busy in the bedroom….
Ah, not true! For those tasks, surely a man needs a sharp knife in his pocket. All that would have done is change the time of his bloodletting, for he would surely have slipped and cut himself when resharpening after an exhausting multi hour session in the bedroom.
So, did you finish sharpening the blade? If so, before or after the trip to the hospital?
Also curious, are your boys the kind that want to look into the wound or the opposite? I’ve had both kinds of kids, my first born would want to explore it, the second would be sick, the last? Some of both I guess. lol
I cut nerves and tendon of a finger once, with a sharp chisel used the wrong way (of course). It took an entire year to move that finger again after surgery, now it’s completely recovered. A scar and a little bit of pain when I close it make for an effective reminder.
Guy i knew from motor t in the marines was shapening his k-bar, got distracted or slipped, blade across his palm diagonally between fingers and thumb where the muscle is, down to the bone, thru the tendons, tons of stitches, lost a large portion of the strength in his thumb after that. Was the same field op a guy caught an axe in the back of the head being axe qualled (1/4” left or right it would have killed him )
jarheads, we do stupid crap sometimes
I personally tore a 2” gash in the meat of my thumb muscle on my left hand when the rubber line on a generator came off the fuel shutoff valve on a genetator I was pulling on and I drug my hand across the sheet metal heat sheild, no stitches, and it looks pretty ragged
i have a couple duh moments with knives too. The best(read worst) yet was a couple years ago. I sold a complete ac system to a guy, and was packaging it all up in a 4'x25"x25" homemade box. I was trimming excess cardboard with a razor knife, holding it steady at the bottom. Without thinking I pushed a little harder downward, the razorknife dropped straight down 2' of cardboard and 2" of flesh. Tore right through the cardboard and my left hand starting just below my middle finger going down and exiting below my pinky. All in one nice and easy swipe. I didn't realize what happened until I saw a pool of blood about 1' diameter on the ground!! the scar is shorter than Warhawks but not by much lol. They ended up giving me 8 stitches, and at almost $800 a stitch it really negated any profit I was going to make lol. My insurance sucks. I would have stitched it myself and definitely should have in hindsight, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't any nerve damage since I couldn't feel it. Cut to the bone but no permanent reprocussions. Couple others that I didn't go to the ER for and probably should have. Elevate!!!!!!
I would like to say I am a man and finished before, but it was after. My oldest boy(5yrs) jumped into action and got me a towel and then took my youngest to the couch and put a movie on for him. My oldest wanted to see everything and wanted to go to the ER with me. My youngest wouldn’t even touch the bandage.
