You found something unknown--did you ever figure it out?

I’ll bet a lot of us have junk drawers or boxes. Places where all sorts of miscellaneous things are placed for possible future use. I’m guilty of having a few, plus some boxes. And there are items inside that have traveled with me from place to place as I’ve moved. When you’re younger, it’s easy to remember a lot things. But as you get older… it’s easy to become forgetful, especially if it’s something you’ve not looked at for 20 years or so!

So what’s an item you’ve found in your junk drawer/box and wasn’t able to figure out for the longest time, but eventually did? Or, what’s something you’ve got that you still can’t figure out? Maybe fresh eyes on it can help. Knowing how flashlights can come with all sorts of accessories or spare parts, if they’re tucked in an unmarked ziplock bag, it can become anyone’s guess as to what it is. But who knows, if you post here, maybe someone can identify it.

So this isn’t flashlight related, but I’d found this little ziplock bag with a red rubber “thingy” in it. I was totally stumped. The only clue was that there was a part number on the bag. Nothing about the brand, though. So I ran it… and at first nothing came up. But then I added “red” to the criteria. And identity found.

At one point in time I worked for IBM. And I had a work laptop, a Thinkpad. This particular laptop has a “trackpointer” in the center of the keyboard, which can work like a pseudo mouse. It’s kind of cumbersome to use. The only real purpose is when you’re typing and you want to nudge the pointer over a little—the red nubbed pointer is easier to use than taking your hand off the keyboard and using the mouse. Of course nowadays 99% of laptops/notebooks come with a touchpad, eliminating the need for this trackpointer. Anyway, a spare rubber trackpointer cover was included in the box, and I’d tossed it in with a few other miscellaneous items in a drawer. I don’t know how, but it managed to follow me for over 15 years!

Yeah, I have a few of these. Different types and for different models. I use the Trackpoint a lot. On some laptops the touchpad is switched off completely.

I have lots of unopened stuff in storage. I recently pulled out a box that's maybe 10 years old and found the following items. Just for fun, I know what they are now but can anyone tell me what the two items are from the photo??

Drum brake parts

That’s a drum brake set of springs and a replacement oil drain bolt.

Bingo! You got it. :+1: How bouts the smaller item?

Damm you guys are good!

Okay now for something harder! Does anyone know what it is?

Some sort of vacuum operated solenoid. I’ve seen them on throttle bodies before. Used to have one like it on my 4th gen Prelude

Okay, a hard one, and what is it and what does it do?

Yeah it’s a vacuum solenoid but it’s not for the throttle body. Know what system in the car it’s for?

Haha, well that’s what it did in my car. If I remember correctly it was to do with the choke

Okay, I’ll leave the answer out for the vacuum actuator thing for the time being. Let the suspense build for everyone! So the question now would be what part of the engine system does the item in the photo belong to?

Okay okay, it’s a Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator for the turbo system. Specifically the exhaust portion part of a turbo system.

The item above is an air humidifier. The cylinder thing is the cotton tube you stick in the water. The disc thing sits on top of the cotton cylinder. Add 5v, turn it on and you have a mini humidifier.

Nope.

I live in a small apartment where everything has its place. But when sweeping the floor this week I found a tiny black rubber. It looks like the foot from the bottom of an electronic device. Heck if I know what it’s from though. I haven’t moved any appliances around lately either.

There was a thread similar to this about a year ago. The photo of the eerie mysterious pieces of metal were posted by the owner who found them and could not remember what they were. Turns out they were titanium implants for a broken bone.

Yep. I’ve found those too. And was able to match it to the device. You never know—it might’ve fallen off a while ago. Hang onto it.

I’ve had a few things for years that I just Can’t identify. Every year or so I’ll examine them wracking my brain and then toss them back in the box. What I’m sure of is, if I throw them away I’ll suddenly remember what they are as the trash truck disappears in the distance.
