Thatâs terribleâŚIâm sorry to hear that
Praying for you/yours right now.
You will get through this and another (better) door will open.
Faith is everything.
Hey, the first half of my career I was bouncing from one job to the next because the company: a) moved to Florida, b) stopped doing engineering altogether (focussed on service/repair), c) went out of business, d) eliminated a whole department, e) just plain hated me for not bending over and kissing their asses.
The secret is to amass as large a âF@(% you!â fund as you possibly can, donât âidentifyâ with the job (ie, donât make your job your identity), and never ever take it personally.
The last place I mentioned where they hated me, they canned me only after they made several attempts to fire me âfor causeâ but I didnât bite. Finally, they just made the excuse they were âlaying offâ people (1, me), and did. My tech told me with a chuckle that in the next 3mos they hired and fired 3 new engineers to try to do what I was doing.
Finally, my old boss who was promoted up and out (and I was hired to fill the void) had to go back down to doing my old job as well as his new one as chief engineer.
To quote Ahnold, âThis must be what they call⌠poetic justiceâ. (âRaw Dealâ)
Oh, the best part? I found out that I got canned⌠from American Express! The company offers to pay the AmEx annual fee if you get the card, because back then AmEx was the only card to include insurance if renting a car with the card. So I did the 1-800-THE-CARD thing to apply. Things were getting stressful at work, I finally said that I got a weekâs vacation coming, I need time to decompress. âUhhh, this isnât the best time to take time off, as things are going to be happening fast in the company.â âOkay, so I take a weekâs vacation, or a weekâs sick-time.â I took the vacation. That was the Friday afternoon immediately before I took off the whole next week (nb: the timing!).
I call AmEx first thing that Monday, ask about my status because itâd been a while, âOh, Iâm sorry, youâve been declined.â.
âHuh? Really?â
âWell, we called your company to verify your salary and how long youâve worked there, but were told that this Fridayâs going to be your last day.â
âReally? Wow, thatâs news to me!â
âWha- what? Oh my God, Iâm so sorry!â
I had to calm down this poor woman, because she was in tears letting me know Iâd gotten canned. Iâm actually happy, breathing my first âfree airâ like someone just let out of jail, telling her itâs the best thing for me, to go find someplace new and better.
Wehehehell, Iâm home all week, chillaxing, didnât go anywhere, and no one from work ever bothered to call me and let me know. I waited âtil 4:45 that next Friday to call and find out for sure.
The receptionistâs voice changes as soon as she recognises mine, like sheâs talking with a ghost. I get transferred to Boss-Manâs line:
âTony LastNameHereâŚâ
âHey, Tony, guess who?â
âOh⌠uh⌠hi.â
âSay, Tony, should I bother coming to work this Monday?â
pause
pause
pause
âUh⌠well⌠no, I guess not.â
âWell, gee, thanks for telling me.â, and I hung up.
Yeah, a real POS company.
Feel any better?
But revenge is a close second.
Carp! As a self employed carpenter I have to look for work a few dozen times a year but have come to realize that if youâre good at what you do you shouldnât have to stress over it so I donât anymore. Employers will recognize your talent but the first criteria is pass the drug test. Be relaxed, it shows as confidence in yourself. Do a few mods while you have the time and the weather keeps you inside. Good luck.
Lucifer, is that you?
(âLuciferâ being the Greek translation of âlight bringerâ or âlight bearerâ)
The nameâs not important, but you can call me Lu.
Ouch - sorry to hear that!
Best wishes, and hereâs hoping that whatever you find next will be somehow better than what you have now.
Wish you the best, hope this will bring you a better job.
So sorry to hear that.
But from your story, as a IT support, I believe youâll get decent job in anytime soon.
Sorry to hear that, hope you find a job soon.
Sorry to hear that⌠hope you get everything sorted out.
Sorry to hear that. Thankfully you are in a pretty employable field (as others have said).
Sorry to read these sad tidings
Keep strong!
Jobs come and go, my friend. What stays is friendship and experience⌠and flashlights
Good luck finding a place where people actually appreciate you instead of treating you like chopped liver.
Sorry to hear. Hopefully things will work out for the best.
I am in the same boat, I have three weeks left. The site I work at is up for sale but since there are no buyers it is being shut down. They keep cutting down the number of people who work here. I am out with the next round of cuts on Feb 2.
Nice to see some others on here are trying to brighten your spirit
keltex88 and Dave G - sorry to hear you guysâ bad news - best of luck to both of you finding a great job moving forward! You never know, what today appears to be a setback could turn into a positive change in your life when you see it in hindsight from some point in the future.
When my father (passed away 6 years ago) was working, it was not uncommon at all for an employee to be with the same company from first day hired to the day of their retirement (and the proverbial gold watch) and to have had the opportunity to work oneâs way âup the ladderâ within that company.
Not so much anymore - - -
- - - and thatâs a bad thing in my opinion.
good luck to you.
Sorry to hear this.
But with your qualifications, youâre bound to find a new or even better one.
But sad it is.
Really appreciating the prayers and kind wishes everyoneâŚ
The company and facilities I support have been going through severe cutbacks as well due to a recent corporate bankruptcy, so Iâm just the latest one on the chopping block. Iâve been watching good friends here get laid off since late summer.
So my qualifications probably arenât quite as good as some of you are assuming but I do have 12 years experience in the field. Actually, within about two hours of finding out yesterday, I had a promising lead for a job with a banking institution here locally. Iâve been talking to their HR rep and am hoping something will pan out. I donât expect the pay to be quite as much as the job Iâm losing, but I donât have much room to be picky at the moment.
Iâm not counting on any severance pay either. My employer (soon-to-be-ex) is an overseas based IT Service contractor whose business ethics and practices are not the best. They are good about manipulating the system to ensure that you donât actually get terminated âinvoluntarilyâ. Instead, they will âre-locateâ you to a different contract, possibly in a remote/undesirable/out-of-state location. You are then faced with three choices:
1. Move somewhere you donât want to take a job you donât want
2. Voluntarily terminate your own employment
3. Get fired for not showing up to your new location as expected
Iâm hoping that I can have another job lined up before my final work date so I can give them a scathing exit interview they will never forget⌠:smiling_imp:
Under normal circumstances, I am a proponent of NOT burning bridges but I will be happy to put this company behind me forever.
Has totally happened to me. You get up and move on! I know the emotional devastation, the degradation of self-worthâŚit is tough. Bigger and better things await!
