Cheap S2+ mods

Hello, I’m into learning modding. For the start I have a S2+ that I got for $7. My rules are:

  • maximise quality/$
  • regardless of anything, stay under $10
  • work is free, but I’d like to stick with relatively fast / simple mods
  • I’d like it slightly throwier
  • If I try a mod and later reverse it, I don’t count its cost
  • tooling cost doesn’t count

So what can I do to improve it?

  • Switch firmware ($0.0x, the greatest benefit that can be achieved)
  • Solder another couple of AMCs ($0.34)
  • Stack another couple of AMCs? Doesn’t it go too far into the inefficient zone?
  • Replace reflector with narrow TIR to improve throw ($0.18). Tried that already, the throw is worse.
  • Dedome the LED ($0.0x)
  • AR coated lens ($1.66 today). Is it worth it?….
  • SMO reflector (Over $2). I don’t think it’s worth it…
  • Spring bypasses? Thicker wires? I guess longer regulation isn’t worth it…

Any comments? Suggestions?

Definitely bypass springs and go thicker 22AWG wires.

8X 7135 driver with biscotti is about $5

throwier would be XP-L HI and SMO but there goes the budget.

What emitter and how many 7135 are in the light?

6*AMC, XM-L2. There’s a place for another couple of AMCs ready, so I just need to add them. But I’m waiting for the programmer to arrive before I unsolder the light.

Ah you can flash firmware… Cresendo.

There are some cheap lighted tail caps from Convoy now.
DIY 1288 LED Lights Lamp Lighting Switch For Convoy C8 M1 M2 S2 S2+

DTP copper MCPCB
And you can stack 7135 to have more than 8. 10 would be 3.5+Amps, if you get copper DTP the XM-L2 can handle it.

I think I’ll try several firmwares…thanks for suggestion. Smile
Lightened switch would kill the chance of any major performance improvement, so I guess it has to go.

I’ve got a couple of KD DTP boards on the way, I want to use one on B158B, have no use for the other yet. But that’s about the same cost as AR coated lens and together they don’t fit the budget…

Lighted tail, Not Lightened.

The LED lighted tail switches I linked are blue.
S2+ uses a 16mm MCPCB. And would need to be XM footprint 5mmX5mm emitter.

The ones on the way are 20 mm. I guess I can trim them to size or…order smaller too, dropping the price slightly (even if just on paper). There are $1 Noctingons on sale now, but minimum order of 20 is a bit too much.
BTW, KD has a cheaper lens than the Fasttech one that I’ve seen before, but slightly small. $1.5 with 19.8 mm diameter. Will it work?

Oh, and there’s 20 mm one on FT for $1.17. Much better now….but I’m still not certain if it’s worthwhile.

Cheap Fet driver. East-092?
XP-G2 S5. Can be taken from another flashlight.
Noctigon or KD pcb.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I find that firmware can make or break a light and that of East is definitely a breaker for me. I searched for alternative firmware, it seems to use some unpopular MCU, so no easy fix. I see a similar driver that doesn’t seem to be very popular. Still, no different firmware available.

Nevertheless the following:

  • dedomed SST-40
  • BLF A6 driver
  • DTP MCPB
  • AR coated lens Narrow TIR
  • bypasses of both springs
can be had for just over $15.

is interesting too. Will the stock switch survive? Anyway, 52% over the budget won’t do.

Are the copper mcpcbs on Fasttech actually DTP?
like this one?
https://www.fasttech.com/products/1611/10028388/6222001

If they are, it would be a good price (-15% with “THANKS15”).

The 16mm mcpcb is also available, which would be a good addition for a cheap S2+ mod.

If you are not happy with the narrow beam TIR you could try other beam angles.
Do not forget to adjust the TIR.

Thanks TBone, that’s a great info. I did nothing to focus the lens, that may be the problem.
Also, I used the cheapest lens that I could find. Should I expect a Convoy or LEDDNA one to be better?

Some people like TIRs more than reflectors as there is less spill.
“The cheapest I could find” usually is not the best quality. Check the Convoy TIR thread and see if you like it.

I just experimented with focus. Before, I didn’t remove the centering ring. Now I did and it helped a lot, judging by the eye the hotspot is brighter than the reflector now. It seems that the LED itself doesn’t let it sit low enough, so there should be further gains after dedoming. Anyway, I’ll try a better lens too. Smile

One trick I forgot, but got reminded in another thread. I can try to make the stock MCPCB DTP. Smile

Instead of filing down a 20 mm PCB it might be easier to file down the protruding part of the pill where the 16 mm PCB sits. (Just an idea, haven’t done this yet.)
And I don’t believe it’s worth to do spring bypasses as long as you don’t use a FET driver or stack plenty of 7135. Same with thicker wires.
Dedoming is good for throw – and not too difficult with XM-L2.
Coated lens gives only little lumen gain but might worsen the tint.

Most easy mod for throw probably is to get a cheap XP-L HI on DTP board – KD usually has fair prices – and a BLF A6 driver (look for coupons). And spring bypasses and thicker wires in this case.

Most beautiful mod of course is a triple with carclo and high CRI LEDs but this will exceed your budget slightly. KD has triple boards with Nichia 219C 4000K CRI92 for little money, cheaper than single LEDs. But the boards are crap, you should reflow the LEDs to a noctigons. I did this mods with copper spacers but I’ve seen some old posts here where members did it even without spacers.

is there any way to fit metal tail switch for grey or black S2+s?

and on the first day he said "Let there be light"...

Like this?

No. Innocent
.

The opening for the silicone tailcap is bigger than the thread for the metal button.
But a press-in adaptor ring could work. Metal buttons are available as spares.

Exactly Grad

What press-in adapter ring did you use? is the switch a perfect fit? does it wiggle around?

SCNR. No adapter. This is genuine.

(It was a prototype for the clip-on-button recharge as for BD series.)

Sofirn is selling the driver in their C8A/C8T torches as a standalone upgrade:

https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Sofirn-New-C8A-C8F-C8T-Driver-2-Groups-Circuit-Board-Anti-reverse-LED-Driver-Chip-mode/2933049_32834504322.html

That close-up picture was shot by me with the help of a 37mm (Google cardboard) convex lens atop my smartphone camera lens. With this driver current went above 6A on an XP-L HI emitter in their C8T flashlight. Steps down to low power MOSFET operation after 3:25 (205 seconds) and has moonlight mode packed together with a funny strobe in group mode 2:

Cheers Smile

I ordered 2 different 10-degree lenses from leddna. But I can’t help but wonder will my 5-degree lens be throwier? Better quality vs. narrower design. But a more important question: will a good 5/8 degree lens be better than what leddna or Simon offers? And how to find a good one?

I have the 10-degree lens from LEDDNA. came in excellent packaging, gives a good throw from an S2+ (you can “feel” the beam). they had them on sale earlier this year (not sure how much I paid).
Don’t have any results from a 5-degree lens though.

I got 21×12.5 and 20×13.5 mm for $0.40 and $0.54 respectively. I may get a third S2+ here before the lenses arrive, so I may be able to directly compare stock vs. cheap 5° vs. LEDDNA 10°, even if only by the eyes…
