TK's Emisar D4 review

Thanks for the review!
i just bought my D4 with the XPL-Hi 5D, i’m wondering why the xpl-hi is $18 more expensive, i dont think there is that much difference in led prices

Yes, but lack of throw is my only reason to prefer a similar light with one LED.
D1 is similar to that, but its reflector is large enough to make it bad at close distance.
I want light that’s OK up close, but not a thrower. There is no Emisar like that.

OK. It seems like a D1 with optic instead of reflector would probably work for you.

I agree. I want something in between D4 and D1 with a better heat management.

D2?

A typical EDC light has a beam shape of about 8-12 cd/lm. Ish.

The Emisar line comes in ~4 cd/lm, ~33 cd/lm, and ~100 cd/lm.

None of the options fit the EDC beam style. That’s why I want a single-emitter light like the D4. It’d probably be the most useful variety for general purposes. Also, a single-emitter version should be cheaper and a bit smaller.

Probably Anduril. Or NarsilM or DarkHorse.

What is your definition of overheating? To hot too touch or damage?
As I remember the Q8 can run full on turbo. The lamp survived over 40 minutes. After 1h it starts to cool down.

Too hot to hold in a room-temperature environment without hurting one’s self.

these will run the D4 XP-L’s for 15-20 seconds on TURBO before triggering the thermal protection set at 65 degrees. which is more than enough time for spotting a crashed UFO at a considerable distance.

that is called marketing…

can be used in this light recheargable 18650s? or are they too long?
how many seconds can run xplhi version on high?

Protected cells won’t fit! It is advised to use high drain unprotected cells! :+1:

You have to do some modification in the tailcap to make protected cells become contact

A user in the German Flashlight Forum (TLF) tested this with copper rings in the tailcap

It works but not with the full power

this rechargeable lion are ONLY protected?? never seen them before…i know nobody whos using them, but i think its very progressive idea this lions…

No, the replies were informing that even a protected (longer than normal) cell wont fit, so therefore a USB rechargeable (also longer than normal) cell won’t fit either.

The USB rechargeable cells may not be protected, however I’m not aware of any High Drain USB rechargeable cells, and a High Drain cell is what allows the D4 to reach it’s full potential.

If reaching full output is not something you’re concerned with, you may be able to use a USB rechargeable cell by doing the copper ring mod described in the German forum.

.
Also technically all 18650 cells are “rechargeable” to avoid possible confusion the cells you’re referring to would be better described as “USB rechargeable” cells.

I was going to write this precisely
“USB rechargeable” is more clear to understand what vresto meant

Thanks, I’m happy someone else agrees, I actually felt kind of anal by pointing it out because I figured most readers understood what he meant, but it was my own slow working brain that had a duh moment when I first read his post, took me a few minutes to realize he was referring to USB cells :person_facepalming:

Ahah, so both we have slow working brains mate, worry not
I was also confused at first, but then perceived the intention! :+1:

Anyway, I don’t think that USB rechargeables will fit, and mostly, they probably won’t deliver the maximum energy that this light needs to be “a hot rod”! :expressionless:

I received my Emisar D4 with High CRI Nichia from Hank. My first one got lost in the mail, and he was very professional in getting me a replacement. I am very happy with his service, and I am happy with the light overall, but my only complaint is that the lowest lumen setting is not low enough for me. I like the sub lumen settings of the Zebralights, and the Emisar won’t go that low. Are there any plans to change this in the future?
