Greetings. I’m new here, and I have learned a whole bunch of stuff here. I’m an engineer who is hopelessly in love with LED’s, a love that transcends time and space. My hobby is wildlife photography. Lately, I’ve been shooting barn owls. The owls are nocturnal, I photograph them at night, from a distance, using a long lens. The S70s moonlight setting is perfect for me. Throws just enough light for me to discern motion. When the bird is at rest, perhaps eating, I crank the S70s, which provides the light necessary to acquire focus. From there I hit the bird hard with flash.
I use the S70s tripod mounted. It’s a wonderful tool that I can’t live without.
I’ve seen the S70s reviewed here, the few responses seem to be just lukewarm, I appreciate concerns about series connected batteries, but there is an advantage. My guess is that the series connected batteries make possible the use of a buck converter. Paralleled batteries require the use of a boost converter. Me? I would rather see a buck converter than a boost converter.
The S70s isn’t sexy, but it is beautifully functional. Why no love for thr Thorfire S70s ?
I have a modded S70s (xhp70.2/TA narsilm driver) and it’s in one of the cars as the go-to emergency light. So there is love for the light but maybe no one wants to talk about it.
I got a S70 a few weeks ago and I like it. My favorite feature is the lighted button and tailcap button for lockout. The second is the strap.
It puts out a bunch of light that lasts hours,
It is still smaller than my mag light.
I have a heavily modded S70 and love it… but do not have a need for another one and it is a utility light for me that I just never discuss. With the newer Q8 and other brute force throwers, I think the XHP70 beasts are feeling a little less love.
Part of what I love about it, is that I can light a large area at 200 to 250 yards. I use it for ’yote hunting and general late night game watching.
Not sure, but there’s a post somewhere where the Convoy L6 and the Thorfire S70 is compared and they come out pretty close. I never used the stock light before I modded it so I can’t say anything about performance. But my opinion is that around these parts Convoy gets a lot of love and maybe that’s why Thorfire doesn’t when it comes to the S70s because of the L6 (which now comes in 3 colors).
Interface is great compared to the Thrunite TC20. I can get to any power level in a flash with the S70S. The TC20 takes a while to cycle through the available power levels. I use the S70S as a light source for photographing nocturnal wildlife. For me, it’s vitally important that I can change settings in just a moment, which the S70S lets me do. I leave the S70S in standby over the course of an evening, having the illuminated button is terrific. Over the course of an evening parasitic drain is a non-issue. I adore the S70S, I wouldn’t change a thing. Thorfire hit a home run with this one.
