When I finished the grooves on the tail it still looked a bit over weight. I didn’t envision holes in the tail but that’s what I got. I am worried the tail (and head) might look too busy and detract from the mokume body.
Next is making a switch retaining ring. Then I’ll be at a bit of a cross roads. I think it looks pretty cool with a straight body as is. In which case I might have enough space to bore out the body some more to use 21700 cells. However my initial thoughts were to have a tapered, rippled or curvy body to pronounce the mokume grain.
… I’m still thinking my initial idea.
It doesn’t really show up in the pic but the grooves on the tail are not quite as deep (and wide) as on the head, I thought I had this suss’d So many things let me know how much I still have to learn about machining
I think it looks really wonderful as it is now , but considering the battery tube is made of mokume I can understand that it deserves emphasizing with a suitable texture
Yes, similar to that but not nearly as nice. The twist is… well… less twisty and as I mentioned in the OP one side doesn’t show any copper. Pic with one of the bars for reference.
I wasn’t happy with the switch retaining ring so I made that again today. It makes the switch that little bit harder to press.
Before
after
After that I assembled it with orings in place to check for water tightness in my water feature in the backyard. I’m not 100% on the bezel orings and might make some adjustment there but it otherwise survived the dunking without ingress. Of course, tried for a glamour shot…. but you know ….
Outstanding Pink! Not in the same league? Of course not, you’ve created a new one! Tremendous amount of detail work, jealous as all get out over here…
I have a short bar of Mokume Gane and a short bare of Timascus, haven’t decided exactly what to do with them. Won’t be anywhere near what you’ve achieved with this one I know…
I think me and Steve are going to drink some brewskies and beat ourselves up over how we fail…
I wouldn’t abrasive blast the Ti.
I would complain to the seller bout the uniformity of the pattern. I know Mokume ain’t cheap. Might get a replacement for another build.
@vwpieces Maybe I wasn’t clear enough in OP, I didn’t pay for this section of mokume.
Generally speaking this size of light isn’t really my preference. I wanted to use this as a ‘test piece’ to see how it machined etc… once I picked the internals (driver, switch, reflector) I got to making and couldn’t stop.
I may or may not have read the details, it was 5 days ago.
But I prolly got distracted by the pictures and didn’t read much else. I do remember most of the pics… funny how the (My) brain works. Bad with names but I’ll remember many little details about your car. Words… not so much.
And FWIW, I Just read the OP and you were clear on getting the end piece free. Figured I will tell ya that before I forget what I read. I might need a reminder in a few days though.
