[04-Jun-2012] New post editor option

Hi everyone,

For the past few years BLF has been using an advanced post editor to format posts with bold text, tables, alignment, etc. This advanced editor will continue to be available for this who prefer it.

However, many users experience issues with the advanced post editor.

  • Under certain circumstances it loses parts of the post
  • It is rather large and slow to load.
  • It is overly complex for simple posts.
  • It produces weird formatting when pasting in text from other sources.
  • It is incompatible with some desktop browsers.
  • It is incompatible with many mobile browsers for Android and Apple products.

For these reasons, BLF is now offering an optional new post editor for those who prefer it.

  • Description for people who don’t care: The new editor is simple, fast, and compatible with all browsers, but it has less options and doesn’t show the formatting until you submit the post.
  • Description for geeks: The new post editor is based on the Textile markup language. This is my favorite method of editing content, which is why I chose to use it here on BLF. Wink Instead of showing the final format while editing the post, Textile uses simple tags to mark text for later formatting. Textile tags are much more simple and intuitive than HTML, and they don’t clutter up the post with a lot of
    <confusing>tags</confusing>
If you prefer, you can directly type the tags yourself. Or, you can use the tag buttons that I created especially for Textile on BLF. Upon submitting the post, a converter will automatically render your Textile markup in proper HTML.

How to switch between the new and old post editor

To switch editors for a single post: Expand the ▸Input Format tab below the post editor, and select “Simple Post Editor” for the new one, or “Advanced Post Editor” for the old one.
To set your default post editor: Go to your user account settings, click the “Edit” tab, and toward the bottom you will see options for “Preferred input formats”.

Known issues

  1. Issue: There is currently no way to make the “Simple Post Editor” buttons disappear when the “Advanced Post Editor” is in use.
    1. Solution: Don’t click on the “Simple Post Editor” buttons when using the “Advanced Post Editor”.
  2. Issue: It is not possible to switch a post from one input format to another.
    1. Workaround: If you create a post with the “Simple Post Editor” and later decide you want to continue editing it with the “Advanced Post Editor”, you can:
      1. Save your post or view the saved post you want to change.
      2. Select and copy the formatted text.
      3. Click “Edit” on the post.
      4. Switch the input format to “Advanced Post Editor”.
      5. Paste in the formatted text and continue editing it.
  3. Issue: Some common formatting buttons might be missing on the new “Simple Post Editor”.
    1. Solution: Please let me know, and I’ll see if I can add the button.

For now, I am going to set the default input format to the new “Simple Post Editor” to force everyone to try it. Wink Please use it for a few days and see if you like it. If not, you can always switch back to the old editor by default by following the above instructions.

I hope this will resolve a lot of issues for our users. Thanks for being a part of BLF! Have fun.

Thanks for giving us the choice... I immediately changed my settings back to the advanced editor.... otherwise no mouse-over comparison pics, which is just a cool feature.

OK. Works well, but preview is quite confusing :~ I thought it will be like “ [ i] italic text[ /i] “ or “ < i> italic text < /i> “ , but instead of that, it just adds “_” after and before text Flat Stare
On the other hand, smileys now works great and you can post two smileys together.
Haven’t noticed “disappeared” text.

Another option would be just switch the input format when you want to post a comparison picture. Or, I could probably add a button for comparison photos. I’ll add it to my TODO list.

Actually I chose to avoid that formatting system (BBcode) because I don’t like all the brackets and slashes that make it rather confusing for me to read. But to each his own. Smile

It's not only this feature but also "paste plain text", "font sizes and styles", "remove formatting", "Disable rich-text" (especially important for custom video insertion) and other features that worked better with the advanced editor. The new one seems simpler, but also a lot less powerful.

Both work well enough for me. I’m sure the new simpler editor would have been great with my old computer.

This is just a rambling test post

Actually I think I like this one better.

Hmmm, not much difference except you don’t have to look at the html code before it uploads, I like it.

They only problem with the new setup is the text is really small and not so easy to see; especially the difference between “,” and “.”. It kind of gives me a headache. Other than that, simple is better for me, generally speaking.

Aloha Mr. Admin!

Is there a way to personalize and keep the “Advanced Post Editor” as our default ?

Thank you.

Yes there is: My Account -> Edit -> Preferred input formats (yes, it's there, scroll down a lot) + Save

I tried photos tonight, something that had been hit and miss on the old simple editor, worked fine, i’m a happy bunny! Party 8)

I always post off my mobile (no internet at home Crying baby food and nappies is a higher priority and our smart phones tend to do the job) so now I can actually add photos easily. manc voice on NICE ONNNNNEEE! manc voice off

Hi sb,

I am really getting to like your forum, thanks for all the work you put into it.Smile

I still seem to be having trouble getting certain things to work with the post editor.

For example I still cant get links to post as links.   If I cut copy they show as text, and when I click the insert link button and put it in there, next it asks if I want to leave the page.   If I say yes all my text is lost, if I say no the box just stays on the screen.

What am I doing wrong?

In Him (Jesus Christ) was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

@Vestureofblood, are you using the advanced or basic post editor?
