Seen This Cool Light At Sports Authority Today

I went to visit my buddy Rick, and on the way back home I stopped to do some shopping. Seen this one at Sports Authority. It runs on 4 c batteries and it probably weighs close to 2lbs with the 4 c batteries installed. But it’s built like a tank and has a very large head on it. I’m guessing the reflector alone is 75mm. I told Rick it ought to be a thrower. But it only puts out 150 lumens. They wanted $30. Maybe I should of bought it.

Problem with lights like this is the heatsinks are almost always under-designed, with no thermal path to the outside of the light. So while the reflector optics might be great, theres simply no way to turn up the lux with brute-force drive-current to the LED.

Hopefully I am wrong though!! looks like a well made light. I have always had good luck with my ROV products. their chinese 4.0 NiMH AA cells are very good for the $$, and I still have an old Sportsman extreme 2AA light that works great.

looks like its would a sweet host for the people who do the super mods! Match, could put 6 xm-l’s in it in less then two hours and look factory and show us all how to do it at the same time!!! lol

Im just jealous!!!

30 bucks! Forget that place.

Very nice people, got it fast, and I arranged via email to have them strip the clamshell packing and just send me the light without batteries. Cut the shipping in half.

I modded it with an XM-L and a 12-chip 7135 and made it into a good thrower. Tough mod. Cast zinc heatsink holds the reflector.

Don’t try it unless you’re experienced though! Not easy.

Bought this light at Westlake hardware on sale this week at my local store for $17.99

I like it pretty well, handles well. I am a rank amateur on this stuff but the 150 lumens seems optimistic but I don’t know.

Because of design really makes a good work light, sits well on base pointing straight up or on bottom, very stable.

Why? $30, 150 lumins, 2lbs, the size of a small car. For $15 you can get a 18650 XM-L like the Fandyfire 2011 and it fits in a pocket and pumps out 400+ lumins at least.

Unless you are buying it to mod, I don’t see one thing that is good about it.

Well that line of thinking is really ok with me. But really if I thought that way about all lights before I bought one and believe me I am a lot like you in what you said, but for less than $15 shipped, I wouldn’t never see the need to buy another light when something came out new because the Jacob A60 will beat it for the money and be a lot brighter in lux.

I played around with this light 2 days ago at my local sports authority. My wife has a shop-kick ap for her iPhone and is slowly racking up store credit there, since we live near 2 of them. Its a really heavy thick plastic shell, really solid feeling. Would make for a nice mod host IMHO. 4C NiMH is a GREAT power source, they can crank out TONS of sag-free current. An XML at 3A with an 8-9x7135 driver is a cake walk for these cells.

What this light really needs is an XR-E led driven about like the Jacob A60 and around 300 lumens or so. With that big of reflector, it would be one bad thrower.

It's good to have you here, larrupin!
