Has anyone noticed, the torches we like...

are getting closer in form to the torches we grew up with?
You know, the 2 “D” or 2 “C” cell light with a larger head/reflector?

I think I mentioned this about a year ago…XM-L is probably going to be the brightest thing around for awhile, so the only way to improve the beam is to either go multiple XM-L or work on the reflector. Wider, maybe deeper, reflectors will be the bigger improvements we see in the marketplace.

Personally, I like the 63mm sized reflectors, and they are sort of nostalgic as well. Looks like a real flashlight, not some slip-in-your-pocket p60. Now I’m waiting for a 78mm reflector that houses 3 x XM-L the have individual reflectors that are wider and deeper than the p-60-sized multiples we see on the market now.

LOL, seems like the more things change, the more they remain the same.

Except for the output

There is something to be said for ergonomics. Certain objects just feel better when they fill your hand like they should. Take handguns for example. Everyone loves the Browning Hi-Power because it fills the hand and feels great. Nobody talks about how good a snub nose feels in the hand. I bet that more snubbies get carried everyday than BHPs but you would never guess it by the press the Browning gets.

Fact is, nobody really carries a BHP but people love them. Same for these bigger lights. They feel good but the pocket lights get all the real use. I use my penlight 20X more than any of the 18650 lights I own.

I don’t know man…I like the bigger lights but the smaller belt sized xm-l’s are what I was after…I was looking for something I could throw on my belt and be able to light up a field…I was sick of carrying around the maglite for patrols etc and would always leave it in the office…I wanted something I could stow and forget until I needed it…the 980l has been on my belt for 2 years and has been a faithful companion for 2 years…I pull it out and I have as much light as I ever need…that to me is why I got into these lights.

Sort of… I like the big reflectors, but the single 18650/26650 form remains my preference. Especially now with the XML, and its low Vf.

back then flashlights didn’t have heat issues… actually they didn’t even get warm!
I still have my ‘commercial electric’ 3D incan light… it throws a perfect laser beam of light, only it’s so dim you can’t make much out with it.
