I had no idea hid lights were getting so cheap, I found a few around the 45 quid mark, this being the smallest and nicest looking, damm its making for an itchy finger.

I like HID, and these kits are really nice. But its the battery packs and the history of hit / miss QC from the suppliers keep me from owning one. Proprietary batteries for the most part are a deal-breaker for me. If someone made a 3x26650 design, where I could just load up raw cells… I’d be ALL INTO THAT!!! A 3x26650 cell array can easily handle a 35W load
A 35 watt load is going to pull ~3.24A from its 3.6V cells:
35W / 10.8V = 3.24A
This light uses cells spec’d at 2.2Ah, so that translates to a 1.47C application
3.24A / 2.2Ah = 1.47
Personally I get a little uneasy with Lithium-based cell designs at ~1.5C. I am much more comfortable keeping C down to around 1… but thats just me.
You should also be aware that a lot of these HID battery packs, and the little LED setup built into them have a high parasitic drain. I have seen reports of them completely depleting the batteries in 2-3 weeks of storage.
The light kit / package is really nice though, no denying that.
I’ve got to say Kramer, I’m wary mainly because I just can’t see a use for it for me, it’d be a pure toy. I agree that the cell specs didn’t seem to add up either, and I was unsure if I could just ditch the likely crappy cells and fit some decent ones, there were hid power packs (18650) that were more expensive than this light. I also worry its very shiny with crap components, I’d prefer it to look like a beater and have good components to be honest.
Still, it came up 45 quid with free shipping for me, that’s the same ball park as a cyclone or a bit dearer than an hd2010, to be honest, I could justify the cyclone and hd2010 more than this, and I really don’t need either :bigsmile:
