Looking for a light to get my dad for Christmas. He loves the Fenix E21 I bought him last year but I would like to get him something more powerful.
Here’s my criteria: Budget is under $50, would like to try for 4 x AA NiMH (he does not have the inclination to mess with Li-ion batteries), would like something that leans toward a thrower with usable spill. As always, thanks for the advice.

PA40 seems like a good light or a Cyclone C88 which runs off of 3.
The PA40 looks like exactly what I’m looking for. And if I’m getting one for my dad for Christmas, I may as well order one for myself.
+1 on PA40. It’s a very nice light. Very well made and feels great to carry. More than bright enough for most tasks and a great UI. You might like to try the neutral white one if it’s an option.

Ah…no offense, but if you change your mind to 2xAA you could get very similar light, with a good warranty, from a US company for less:
