Nichia 5mm led mod on keychain lights

I have just received my nichia 5mm NSDW570GS 36 lumen leds from ledrise. link
Ordered on October 14th, received today, November 15th.

I do not know any other source for these leds, but I think it can be ordered direct from japan.

Tried to replace 5mm LEDS from my Osram key chain light and screwdriver with LED light.

First the Osram key chain light before mod.

Finished light with new led.

Its light output is very good, it is 120 degree led so it floods.
Color tint is between neutral while to cool white,
output level is about 30 lumens to my eye.
I can feel the heat on the led. I do not expect it to run long.
This key chain light only works while pressed on the button. No continues run switch.

The second mod is a screwdriver with a light

Before the mod, the internals.

Nichia led in close-up

Before the mod with its orginal led.

After the mod with Nichia led.

I have 15 more leds to experiment.

Thanks for reading.

Looks good!!

Looks good! If there is enough room, you could solder in a curent limiting resistor to get more lifetime out of the LED.

I thought it, but the original designs of both do not include limiting resistors,
I suppose, the button cells can not feed that much current to burn the led.

I once measured the current on an led light with 3 button cells that was built into a lighter. It drew 35 mA, which is a lot for a standard 5mm led that is rated for only 20 mA and I saw a few leds die in such a configuration. These lights are clearly designed as a throwaway product.

Now, the Nichia is rated up to 80 mA and shouldn't have a problem in the screwdriver. I'd be more worried about the keychain light as it runs on 6V.

i have mod-ed around 50 lights with those leds from led-rise
most were the 2 x 2016 button cell key-chain ones from DX but also done a few 3 x AA running direct drive no failures yet

Thanks for the info,
I have also that dx ones, but I cannot managed to put the led correctly, it gets lighted without a touch.

i had to play around with the first few have you tried loosening the screws a little
i also put a bit of tape or heat shrink on the first 5-6 mm of the + leg at the LED

I have tried using a tape over one leg of the led with dx key-chain light, it worked ok. Thanks.
