I just thought I would show beam shots of a stock 2AA LED Maglite, a 2AA with an XM-L T6 + TIR optic and a 2AA LED with an XM-L T6 + a stippled stock LED maglite reflector.
I bought one of the two packs of 2AA LED lights at Wal-Mart today. I have never modded one of these and I wanted to see if there was a reason to bother, since they are more money.
The order shown in these sets of photos will always be:
- 2AA Stock LED Maglite
- 2AA Incan Maglite Modded with XM-L T6 and a 15 degree TIR optic
- 2AA LED Maglite Modded with XM-L T6 and a stock LED reflector that has been stippled
ALL Shots will be set at; Daylight WB, ISO 100 and F:2.7
The shutter speed is the only thing that was changed
The first sets of shots are all at the garage door. It's a distance of ten feet from the camera to the door. I have done four different shutter speeds, to show more of the beam profiles and outputs.

All the shots of the Stock LED Maglite are with the beam focused to the Tightest Spot. Once you open up the beam, it falls apart and has rings and artifacts all over. The stock light is definitely a thrower. I did a walk around and across the pond, I could actually see the far bank and distinguish the trees. It wasn't bright enough to detect much, but you could detect movement, if it was something large and familiar. That's about 75+ yards out there. Damn good for a 2AA Alkaline light.
The others are floody and you could barely see anything at that distance and could distinguish nothing at all. They were never meant for throw, but they excel at flood.
I don't know if this will tell anyone anything, but at least you get to see a stock 2AA LED Maglite. I would recommend the two packs for the price. Great gifts for the holidays.
