Retrofit luminaires for E17 size incandescent globes?

This bulb is from a ceiling fan. I don’t know the name of this socket size, but they’re larger than the ‘candle’ size bulbs and smaller than the more common Edison socket. We can’t find LED bulbs with this size locally, got any pointers?

Thanks!

I have seen adapters for using candelabra bulbs in those sockets… don’t know where though.

Interesting. Most candelabra bulbs are not barnburners by any means, but at least they’re available. I’ll keep an eye out for adapters.

Hey there… saw your post from a few months back but wanted to comment on it and hope it may be helpful to you (or another future reader).

I am going through the (long/slow/painful/expensive) process of slowing migrating my whole house from incandecents, Halogens, and crappy fluorescents to LEDs. I’m doing it by a lot of trial and error. Buying stuff from Lowes, Home Depot, and the Internet and doing a LOT of returns.

From the look of it, that appears to be an “intermediate base” bulb (… sorry… don’t know the official name…), but I have that size in two of the 4 ceiling fans in my house. (The other ceiling fans are just regular candelabra bases).

Unfortunately, as you have probably found out, they don’t make intermediate base LEDS, or at least not yet.

What I have found is that you can buy an “adapter” that will convert an intermediate base to a candelabra base, or an intermediate base to a regular (Edison?) base.

I am currently trying out mixture of LEDs in one of my intermediate base ceiling fan fixtures to see which I like the best.

I was able to find the adapters on Amazon.

So far, the candelabras I have tried either are too dim (a 3 Watt Panasonic Candelabra I got at Lowes that only puts out about 150 lumens), or are a bit too harsh and directional (a very bright but expensive 5 Watt Bulbrite Candelabara LED I also got from Amazon that puts out at least 300 Lumens). The problem is that since the fans are right over our beds, if we sit in bed and read, the candelabra light tends to be very “focused” and beams the light right into our eyeballs… not good for that application.

The Edison Base LEDs we have tried seem to be better diffused, but the problem is that the light bulbs we have tried are a bit too big for the fixture and extend out past the glass part of the fixture. So far, I have tried out a 50 Watt EcoSmart LED I got from Lowes, but may may try to find a few smaller form Edison LEDs that may look better, but am worried they may not give out enough light. I am also worried that the weight of some of the Edison LEDs is a LOT more then the fixture was probably designed for, and considering the intermediate base incandescent bulbs weigh almost nothing, not sure if there is some risk of an adaptre and heavy Edison LED maybe causing problems down the road with the fixture… I’m not an electrician (… changing bulbs and a switch if I am ambitious is about my limit…), but could be a concern…

I use the 5 Watt Bulbbrite Candelabra LEDs in two small table lamps next to our bed and they put out as much light as a 40 Watt incandescent bulb we had in them at a fraction of the wattage and they are fine in there.

Here is the link to the 5 Watt Bulbrite LED I have tried and are real bright for their size and a bit too harsh so far for the ceiling fan:

I am also testing out some 4.8 Watt FEIT Candelabra LEDs in a big chandelier in our foyer and in two outside lights on our front porch. Unfortunately, although the FEITs are MUCH cheaper then the Bulbrites, I have had 3 of them fail on me so far. They just totally died. I sent a complaint e-mail to FEIT and asking for a warranty replacement refund or exchange, and they want me to call them to discuss, so will be interesting to see what they have to say (plan to call them later this week). If I don’t get any satisfaction from FEIT, I may end up swapping them out for the Bulbrites.

Please note that FEIT also sells a lower Wattage (3 Watt) Candelabra as well, but I had tried that and it was too dim.

Hope this helps, and would be interested if anyone else has tried to get LEDs for an intermediate base ceiling fan.

Michael
